Airplane Rides Near You In Los Angeles: You Fly The Plane

Every airplane ride we sell is a discovery flight: a real first flying lesson, not a sightseeing tour. You sit in the left seat and fly over Los Angeles from Van Nuys Airport, with an FAA-certificated instructor beside you. $229 for 60 minutes, and gift cards never expire.

The Hollywood Sign, the coast and Downtown are landmarks you fly past · every flight lands back at Van Nuys

What An Airplane Ride Means Here

Not A Tour. You Fly It.

There are three ways to get into a small aircraft over Los Angeles, and they only look alike in photos. On an air tour you are a passenger: someone else flies, and nothing is logged. A helicopter tour is the same idea in a rotorcraft. A discovery flight is a flight lesson: the instructor is the pilot in command, and you fly the airplane for most of it.

We do not sell air tours. Every ride on this page is a discovery flight, so you spend it doing something rather than watching: the climbs, the turns and the level flight past the landmarks, with your instructor flying the takeoff and landing. Bring a pilot logbook and your instructor signs the time into it; it counts toward a private pilot certificate if you ever keep going.

  • You sit in the left seat, the pilot’s seat
  • An FAA-certificated instructor beside you with a second set of controls
  • No experience, license or medical certificate needed
  • Every flight takes off from and lands at Van Nuys

The Route

An Hour Over Los Angeles, Landmark By Landmark

Sixty minutes out of Van Nuys Airport: past Universal Studios, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory, one full circle around Downtown LA, then west along the north side of SoFi Stadium and LAX to the coast, up the shoreline from Venice Beach to Malibu and home over the hills. Your instructor takes off and lands. You fly 50–80% of it.

Instructor Takeoff

Van Nuys Airport

Takeoff From Van Nuys

Your instructor handles the takeoff from Van Nuys, one of the busiest general aviation airports anywhere, and explains what is happening the whole way up. Clear of the pattern, you take the controls.

About 1 HourFrom Van Nuys You Fly50–80% From $229All-In No ExperienceNeeded

Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

How Long Should You Fly?

60, 90 Or 120 Minutes?

The minutes you book are minutes in the airplane. The briefing, walk-around and debrief sit around them, so plan on about two hours at the airport for 60 minutes, two and a half for 90 and three for 120.

60 Minutes · $229

The flight most people book first, and the one the route above is drawn for. Enough time to get the feel of the airplane and see the landmarks, with weather and air traffic control setting the final path on the day.

90 Minutes · $299

More time at the controls and room to change the plan in the air: linger over the coast, circle something twice, or practice climbs and turns away from the scenery. The Malibu coast flight for two is built around 90 minutes.

120 Minutes · $399

The longest flight in the Warrior, with time to fly out across the channel to Catalina Island, circle it and fly home. If the marine layer is sitting on the coast, two hours leaves time to fly the city and the mountains instead.

Route by route: the Hollywood Sign flight, sunset flights and the night flight over Los Angeles.

Before You Book

Weight, Age And ID

These decide whether a booking can happen, so check them before you pay. Weight limits are the aircraft’s certificated limits, not a house rule.

Age. There is no minimum age for a lesson. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or legal guardian who signs, and the person flying must see over the panel and wear a headset comfortably.

ID and clothing. Bring a government photo ID, or a passport if you are visiting from outside the US, and wear closed-toe shoes. Headsets are provided, and no medical certificate or paperwork is needed.

Close to a limit? Call (818) 330-1318 before you book. The Cirrus carries more, the multi-engine flight needs everyone’s weight in advance, and the simulator carries anyone.

All Discovery Flight Questions

$229 for 60 minutes in a Piper Warrior with one person flying, $299 for 90 and $399 for 120. Flights for two start at $299, the Cirrus SR22 at $499 ($599 with a passenger), a night flight at $329 and the multi-engine flight for two at $499. No tax, no booking fee.

Yes. You sit in the left seat and fly most of it, about 50 to 80% of the flight, with an FAA-certificated instructor beside you on a second set of controls. The instructor handles the takeoff, the landing and the radios, and the time is logged as dual instruction.

Yes. On the flights for two, one person flies from the left seat and the other rides along on a headset: $299 over Downtown LA or the Malibu coast. The Cirrus takes a passenger for $100 more at 60 minutes. Seats cannot be swapped in the air, so decide who flies first.

Yes, set by the aircraft: 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Piper Warrior, 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined in the Cirrus SR22. The simulator has none. For the multi-engine flight, tell us everyone’s weight when you book. Near a limit, call first.

The typical route passes Universal Studios, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory, circles Downtown LA, runs north of SoFi Stadium and LAX to Venice Beach, then follows the coast past Santa Monica Pier to Malibu and returns over Warner Center. Weather and air traffic control set the final path.

If the weather says no, you do not pay: a canceled flight is rebooked or refunded, never charged. You can move any booking free with at least 24 hours’ notice, and the simulator runs whatever the sky is doing.

Yes. Gift cards never expire, arrive by email within minutes and come in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049, matching every flight. They work on any flight or simulator session, so the person you give it to picks the date and the airplane.

Yes: $329 for 60 minutes in a Piper Warrior, or $399 for two. Night flights run in fall and winter, when it is dark well before 7 PM, and airplanes are back on the ground by 7 PM. The Hollywood Sign is not lit, so this flight is for the city lights.
