Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

The plane ride near Studio City worth taking is the one where you fly. It starts eleven miles west at Van Nuys Airport, about twenty minutes on the 101 from Laurel Canyon and Ventura, and it costs $229 for 60 minutes in the left seat of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor beside you. What makes it different from Studio City is the view of home: the eastbound route follows the north face of the Santa Monica Mountains, so the Universal backlot, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory, the landmarks everyone else flies out to see, are your own neighborhood from above, seen from the north side almost nobody gets.

Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Studio City is $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 and $399 for 120 at Van Nuys Airport, 20 to 26 minutes away on the 101. You do the flying between takeoff and landing, the Hollywood Sign comes up within about the first ten minutes, and the hour goes in your own logbook.

What You'll See From Studio City's Side Of The Route

Three of the route's landmarks are local geography for you: Universal Studios, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory. Sixty minutes covers them properly; the rest of the loop, the circle around Downtown and the coast home, is laid out landmark by landmark on our airplane rides page.

Studio City sits at the foot of the Cahuenga Pass, which means the landmarks everyone else flies out to see are your local geography. From Van Nuys the eastbound route follows the north face of the Santa Monica Mountains, and by the time the airplane is settled in the climb you are already looking at ground you drive past.

The order of arrival is consistent. Universal City comes first, the backlot streets and the sound stages laid out in a way that only makes sense from above. Then the ridge, with Lake Hollywood — the Hollywood Reservoir — sitting in its bowl on the far side, invisible from Ventura Blvd and completely obvious from 2,000 feet. The Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee is next, seen from the north, which is the angle almost nobody has. Griffith Observatory follows on the south slope of Mount Hollywood with the whole of the Los Angeles basin behind it, and further east the downtown skyline stands on the flat.

What You Will Recognize Over Studio City

Closer to home, the things you will pick out first are the ones you cannot see properly from the ground. CBS Studio Center on Radford reads as a block of stages with a parking lot around it. The Los Angeles River runs along the south edge of the neighborhood in its concrete channel and is easier to follow from the air than from any street. Fryman Canyon and the Wilacre Park trails show as a green wedge climbing toward Mulholland, and the houses on the canyon roads above Ventura Blvd step up the hillside in a pattern that is invisible when you are on one of them.

West of that the Sepulveda Basin appears about two minutes before you land, and Studio City residents regularly spend that time working out that the Valley is a bowl, which is not something Ventura Blvd ever tells you.

Getting To 7900 Balboa Blvd From Studio City

The default is the 101 westbound to the Balboa Blvd exit, then north on Balboa for just under four miles. From Laurel Canyon and Ventura that is about eleven miles and twenty minutes off-peak. The 101 west through Sherman Oaks is the weak link between four and seven on weekdays, when it can add fifteen minutes to a trip of this length.

The surface alternative is Ventura Blvd west to Van Nuys Blvd, north to Victory Blvd, then west to Balboa. It is not faster off-peak, but it is far more predictable at 5:30, and it avoids the 101/405 interchange entirely. A Sunday morning booking removes the question altogether: the same eleven miles runs in seventeen or eighteen minutes.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

A discovery flight is not a ride with a pilot narrating; it is a lesson with a view. Two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight is the realistic figure, and the fuller account is in our explainer on discovery flights.

  1. 101 West, Balboa North

From Laurel Canyon and Ventura take the 101 west to the Balboa Blvd exit and go north just under four miles: 20 to 26 minutes off-peak. At 5:30 the Ventura, Van Nuys Blvd and Victory surface route is more predictable. Parking is free at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108; arrive fifteen minutes early.

  2. A Briefing Before Anything Moves

Your instructor sits down with you for about five minutes: yoke, rudder pedals, throttle, the few instruments you will actually watch, and the plan, which from Studio City usually means east along the mountains.

  3. Walk Round The Warrior

Together you check fuel, oil, tires and control surfaces on the actual airplane, the preflight inspection every pilot does before every flight.

  4. The Instructor Takes Off, You Follow Through

Left seat for you, right seat for the instructor, who works the tower and flies the takeoff with your hands lightly on the controls. Once the climb is settled, the airplane is yours.

  5. Fly The Eastbound Leg

You hold the altitude and roll into the turns while Universal City, Lake Hollywood, the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and Griffith Observatory come up in that order. The instructor stays on the controls with you the whole way.

  6. Land, Debrief, Log The Hour

The instructor lands, you talk it through, and the hour is recorded as dual instruction received toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum. No medical certificate is needed because the instructor is pilot in command. What the rest of the certificate takes is on flight training for Studio City residents.

What A Studio City Discovery Flight Costs

Lengths, Aircraft And Prices
Flight Aircraft Price
Discovery Flight, 60 min Piper Warrior PA-28-161 $229
Discovery Flight, 90 min Piper Warrior PA-28-161 $299
Discovery Flight, 120 min Piper Warrior PA-28-161 $399
For Two — Downtown Los Angeles, 60 min Piper Warrior PA-28-161 $299
Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight, 60 min Cirrus SR22 $499 ($599 with a passenger)
Full-Motion Simulator, 60 min Redbird simulator $189

Those prices carry no tax and no booking fee — $229 is the total, and nothing is added between the button and your card. Because Studio City sits at the eastern end of the Valley, the two-person Downtown Los Angeles route at $299 for 60 minutes is the natural choice if two of you want to go; it flies the ground this page has been describing. Weather And Rescheduling

The marine layer that arrives in May and June comes over the Santa Monica Mountains overnight, and Studio City often sits right under the edge of it. If the cloud is low over the pass in the morning, the Valley side is frequently worse, not better. Later in the summer the problem is heat rather than cloud: high density altitude makes the airplane climb less eagerly and the air over the ridge choppier by mid-afternoon.

You are not charged if the weather cancels your flight, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours before the slot. The detail is on the page covering weather, cancellations and rescheduling. A morning around ten, or an evening after six, gives you the best combination of clear air and a clear 101.

The live Van Nuys report shows above once the page has loaded. If it has not, a text to (818) 330-1318 gets you the current conditions at the field, which matter more than what the sky over Laurel Canyon is doing.

Give It As A Gift From Studio City

If the person you are buying for works on a production schedule, a present with a fixed date is a problem. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate gets around that: it arrives by email within minutes, has no blackout dates, never expires and can be handed on, so the person you give it to books the week the show wraps. Thirteen amounts run from $189 to $1,049.

$229 is the 60-minute flight for one. $299 is the Downtown flight for two, the natural choice from this end of the Valley because it flies the ground this page describes, with one person at the controls and the other on the intercom. For someone already talking about a certificate, Flight Training Credit comes in $500, $1,000 and $2,500. Every option is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

On site and free, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. From the 101 Balboa exit it is just under four miles north on Balboa. Navigate to the street address rather than "Van Nuys Airport", because the field has several gates; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.

How Long Is The Drive From Studio City At Rush Hour?

Off-peak it is about twenty minutes. Between four and seven on weekdays the 101 west through Sherman Oaks can add fifteen minutes, so the surface route via Ventura, Van Nuys Blvd and Victory is the steadier choice. On a Sunday morning the same eleven miles takes seventeen or eighteen minutes.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes: book one of the flights for two. From Studio City the Downtown Los Angeles route ($299 for 60 minutes) flies over the ground on this page, and the Cirrus SR22 is $599 for the hour with a passenger. The second person rides in the back with a headset on and hears everything; if you both want a turn at the controls, book a flight each.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

There is no youngest age for a lesson with an instructor; the practical test is whether the person flying can see over the panel and wear a headset, and under-18s need a parent or guardian's signature. Limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Warrior, 200 lb and 400 lb in the Cirrus, and none at all in the $189 simulator.

How Soon Do You See The Hollywood Sign?

Within about the first ten minutes of flying on the eastbound route. You see it from the north, over Lake Hollywood, which is the angle almost nobody has.

Am I Really Flying, Or Is The Instructor?

You are in the left seat with your hands on the yoke and your feet on the rudder pedals. Your instructor handles the takeoff and the landing and stays on the controls all the way through, but the flying in between belongs to you.

When Is The Best Time To Book?

Around ten in the morning, or after six in the evening, when you get both clear air and a clear 101.
