Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

Mission Hills and North Hills are 3.0 to 5.0 miles from You Fly LA at Van Nuys Airport — a 6 to 9 minute drive to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406. Of every community we serve, these two are the closest. There is no route to describe, no freeway to plan around and no traffic hour that changes the answer, and that single fact reshapes what learning to fly costs you in time.

Between them, 91345 and 91343 hold roughly 79,497 people, most of whom have heard the pattern overhead every day of their lives without ever standing on the ramp underneath it. This page is about closing that gap.

Three To Five Miles — The Shortest Drive On This Site

From North Hills (91343) the airport is essentially next door. Balboa Blvd runs south straight to our door; from the Nordhoff Street or Roscoe Boulevard end you are looking at three miles and about six minutes, most of it spent at four traffic lights. Woodley Ave is the parallel road one street east if Balboa is busy, and it drops you at Roscoe within a block of the same turn.

From Mission Hills (91345) add two miles. Come south on Sepulveda Blvd from San Fernando Mission Blvd, past Devonshire and Nordhoff, then west on Roscoe Blvd to Balboa and south. The 405 is the alternative — on at Devonshire, off at Roscoe — and it is genuinely faster only outside peak; at five in the afternoon Sepulveda beats it, because you are traveling three exits and the ramps cost more than the miles save. Either way it is under ten minutes.

What Six Minutes Actually Changes

Most people think of flight training as a fixed price — 40 hours under Part 61, $10,400 for Private Pilot Standard. What they underestimate is the second currency, which is time spent not flying. For someone driving in from the Conejo Valley, a one-hour lesson is a two-and-a-half-hour commitment. From North Hills it is a seventy-five-minute one. Over a certificate that difference is measured in whole weeks.

It also changes which lessons happen at all. Three specific things become possible at this distance and effectively impossible at thirty miles. Short-notice slots: when a student cancels at 4:40 for a 5:30, we can fill it from these two ZIP codes and nowhere else. Marginal weather: on a May or June morning when the marine layer is sitting at 1,200 feet and might lift by ten, you can wait at home and drive over when it does, rather than gambling a long commute on a forecast — see our weather and cancellation policy. And frequency: skill decays between flights, so every gap you leave has to be bought back at the start of the next lesson, and the students who finish cheapest are simply the ones who never left a gap. At six minutes each way, not leaving gaps requires no discipline at all. Lesson frequency is one of the criteria in our framework for comparing flight schools in Los Angeles.

The same arithmetic makes two other things work here. Ground instruction at $110 an hour and the full-motion simulator at $189 for 60 minutes are easy to slot into an evening when the drive is negligible. And the Teens Pilot Course for ages 10–15 at $4,200 is genuinely feasible as an after-school activity from these neighborhoods, which it is not from most of the Valley. We are open 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week — which also suits the shift patterns at Valley Presbyterian and the other employers along the Vanowen and Sherman Way corridor, where a 7 PM lesson after a day shift is an ordinary booking.

The Mission From The Air, And The Rest Of The First Ten Minutes

These communities are so close to the field that you are over them before the climb has finished, which makes the first few minutes unusually dense. The San Fernando Mission is the landmark, and it is one of the genuinely distinctive things to see from a light aircraft anywhere in the Valley. From the ground you get a white wall and a gate on Sepulveda. From 1,500 feet the whole complex resolves: the long low arcaded convento building running its row of arches at a deliberate angle to the street grid, the church alongside it, the bell wall, the enclosed courtyard and garden, and the cemetery beside it — an eighteenth-century footprint sitting inside a twentieth-century subdivision, and obviously older than everything around it in a way no photograph from the parking lot conveys.

North of it, the Santa Susana Mountains close the top of the Valley, with the 405 and the 5 climbing toward the Newhall Pass and the 118 ruling its hard east–west line below. Underneath you the grid is legible street by street: Devonshire and Nordhoff running east–west, Sepulveda Blvd and the 405 corridor cutting north–south through both communities, Woodley and Balboa either side. Turn south and within ninety seconds the grid simply stops at the Sepulveda Basin — Lake Balboa, the golf courses, the wildlife reserve and the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River, a deliberate hole left in an otherwise total city, with Woodley Ave running down the middle of it. Beyond that the Santa Monica Mountains close the far end. Most students find their own roof inside the first two minutes, because the runway they just left is still in the window.

Mission Hills and North Hills are a 6 to 9 minute drive to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. At that distance a one-hour lesson costs you about seventy-five minutes door to door.

Two ZIP Codes, One Obvious Airport

Everywhere else on this site we spend a section weighing fields. Here there is nothing to weigh. Whiteman in Pacoima is a smaller field with far less training capacity, and it is the subject of an active Los Angeles County study of its own future. Hollywood Burbank is a commercial airline airport in Class C airspace where you are sequenced behind jets, which is not a good use of a student's money. Camarillo is thirty-plus miles west over the Conejo Grade. Van Nuys is three.

And it happens to be the right field on the merits too. Van Nuys is Class D, tower-controlled, with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet — at 802 feet elevation beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B, and it carries the deepest maintenance, avionics and fuel infrastructure of any general aviation airport in the region. You talk to a tower from your first hour and learn to fit into busy airspace rather than an empty one. Our pages on Van Nuys Airport and flight training at Van Nuys cover the field and its airspace in detail, and aircraft rental at Van Nuys covers what you can fly once you hold the certificate — which, from these ZIP codes, means a spare Saturday morning is enough for a flight to Santa Barbara and back.

If the 40-hour Private is more than you want to commit to, Sport Pilot at $8,400 is a shorter route with a 20-hour FAA minimum and real limits worth understanding first. Frequently Asked Questions

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From North Hills And Mission Hills?

Three to five miles, six to nine minutes. From North Hills, Balboa Blvd runs south straight to 7900 Balboa Blvd. From Mission Hills, take Sepulveda Blvd south to Roscoe Blvd, west to Balboa, then south.

Is This The Closest Flight School To My Neighborhood?

Yes. Mission Hills and North Hills are the two closest communities to Van Nuys Airport of anywhere we serve, and Van Nuys is the nearest field with a full training fleet. No other airport is worth the drive from 91343 or 91345.

Can I Fit A Lesson Into A Weekday Evening?

Easily. We are open 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week, and at six to nine minutes each way a one-hour lesson costs you about seventy-five minutes door to door. That also makes short-notice slots practical when another student cancels.

Will I See The San Fernando Mission From The Air?

Yes, and it is the most distinctive landmark in this part of the Valley. From about 1,500 feet the long arcaded convento building, the church, the bell wall, the courtyard garden and the cemetery all resolve clearly, set at an angle to the surrounding street grid.

What Does A First Flight Cost From Here?

The same as anywhere: $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90, $399 for 120 — with no tax and no booking fee added at checkout. What is different from North Hills is the total time it takes you, which is closer to seventy-five minutes than to half a day. Piper Warrior weight limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined.

Is There A Course For Teenagers?

Yes. The Teens Pilot Course for ages 10–15 is $4,200, and at this distance it works as an after-school activity rather than a weekend expedition. A student pilot certificate and solo flight come later, at 16.
