Eight Point Seven Miles, One Straight Street

Chatsworth's flight school is Van Nuys Airport — 8.7 miles east, about seventeen minutes, effectively one turn. You Fly LA is at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406. The 91311 has plenty of things a neighborhood does not usually get, including a rail line, a nature preserve and a mountain pass, but it does not have a runway, and Van Nuys is the closest one where you can be taught.

Roughly 40,898 people live in Chatsworth, with a median household income near $119,400. What makes it different from every other community we serve is that its residents have been watching our traffic their entire lives without necessarily knowing what they were looking at. That is worth explaining properly, so it gets its own section below.

The Drive: Devonshire East, Then Balboa

Devonshire St is the whole route. Pick it up anywhere between Topanga Canyon Blvd and Mason Ave, head east through Northridge past CSUN, and stay on it until Balboa Blvd. Turn south. Balboa takes you down past Nordhoff, Parthenia and Roscoe to the airport's western edge at 7900. That is 8.7 miles and 15 to 19 minutes off-peak, 22 to 30 at 5 p.m., and Devonshire's timing barely changes because it is a wide arterial with no freeway feeding it.

The 118 east to the 405 south, exiting Roscoe, is the alternative: quicker before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m., worse in between. Nordhoff St and Plummer St both run east as backups if Devonshire is torn up, which it periodically is.

The Airplanes Over Chatsworth, Explained

Chatsworth sits at the north-west corner of the Valley floor, exactly where the terrain gives way at the Santa Susana Pass. That geography makes it the gate. Anything light leaving Van Nuys for Camarillo, Santa Paula, Santa Barbara or the north-west practice area goes out over Chatsworth, and everything coming home comes back the same way, already descending. If you have spent years noticing single-engine airplanes over the rocks in the late afternoon, that is what you were noticing.

The thing most residents get wrong is assuming the jets are theirs too. They are not. Van Nuys runs its two parallel runways north–south, Runway 16R is the field's preferred runway for jet traffic, and the published procedure sends those departures climbing straight ahead over the Sepulveda Basin flood plain before they turn — which is south, away from you. The airport also prohibits touch-and-go operations between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Chatsworth's overhead traffic is overwhelmingly small, slow and transiting.

None of that is trivia once you start training. A Chatsworth student begins with an intuition most beginners take months to build: where the traffic goes and why terrain decides it. Within a few lessons you fly that gate yourself, learning why the pass funnels wind, why you cross it with altitude in hand, and what the Class D boundary around Van Nuys means for when you call the tower. The Van Nuys Airport page sets out the runways and airspace.

The Rock, From Two Thousand Feet

Chatsworth is the most geologically interesting place to fly over in the Valley, and it is not a close contest. The tilted, wind-hollowed sandstone behind Chatsworth Park reads completely differently from above. From the ground it is a wall. From the air it is a series of parallel ridges, and you can finally see the structure the rock is arranged in.

Stoney Point, which from Topanga Canyon Blvd looks enormous, turns out from two thousand feet to be a single knuckle of stone sitting right against the freeway. Rocky Peak stands up on the east side of the pass. Below, the rail line threads into the rock and disappears — the tunnels through the pass are invisible from the road but obvious from above, because you can see the track go in on the Chatsworth side and come out on the Simi side with nothing in between. The old wagon road over the pass shows up as a pale scar on the slope.

South of that, the Chatsworth Reservoir basin is the surprise: fenced, dry and unbuilt, hundreds of acres of open ground in the middle of a city that almost nobody living beside it has ever seen inside. Turn east and the whole Valley opens up with Van Nuys Airport's parallel runways in the middle of the frame.

Neighborhoods And ZIP Codes We Serve

91311 covers it: the equestrian west end above Valley Circle and Andora with its horse properties and bridle trails, the older neighborhoods around Chatsworth Park North and South, the Devonshire and Lassen corridors, the industrial and studio blocks along Nordhoff and Canoga, and the newer development around the Metrolink station. Students also come from 91304 (Canoga Park), 91326 (Porter Ranch) and 91324 (Northridge), all within a couple of minutes either side of the same Devonshire run. Those two runs are written up separately as flight school near Canoga Park and, east along Devonshire and Rinaldi, flight school in Granada Hills. The first-flight pages for the same corner are a discovery flight near Northridge and a discovery flight near West Hills.

Chatsworth is 15 to 19 minutes off-peak, straight down Balboa. The Santa Susanas on your northern skyline are ten minutes of flying away, not a day trip.

Why Chatsworth Trains At Van Nuys Rather Than Over The Hill

Camarillo looks tempting from the 91311 because the pass is right there. In practice it is twenty-six miles — over the Santa Susana Pass, down through Simi Valley, then the 23 and the 101 — and the pass is the least predictable stretch of road in the north-west Valley. Whiteman in Pacoima is closer to a straight shot but a much smaller field with a far shorter runway and less instructor and maintenance depth.

Van Nuys is the region's busiest general aviation field, with an 8,001-foot main runway and a control tower. For a Chatsworth student the tower is the point rather than the price: you spend your first lesson talking to the controller whose airspace you grew up beneath. Students who learn somewhere quiet acquire that skill anyway, later and under more pressure. Meet the people who teach it on our instructors page.

If you want to sit down first, the free in-person consultation is $0 and takes about half an hour. If you are still weighing operators rather than dates, our guide to choosing a pilot school in Los Angeles covers that decision.

Sport Pilot Or Private Pilot?

This is the question we get most often from the 91311, and it deserves a straight answer rather than an upsell. Sport Pilot is $8,400 and has a 20-hour FAA minimum. Private is $10,400 with a 40-hour minimum under Part 61, or 35 hours on an approved Part 141 course. Two thousand dollars apart, and the wrong choice costs more than the difference.

Sport suits you if you want to fly a light aircraft in good weather, in daylight, with one passenger, and you are content to stay there. Private suits you if you can imagine ever flying at night, carrying three people, adding an instrument rating, or renting something bigger. Almost everyone who upgrades later wishes they had started with Private. Learning to fly in Los Angeles walks the whole path from first flight to checkride.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Far Is It From Chatsworth To Van Nuys Airport?

8.7 miles and about seventeen minutes. Take Devonshire St east through Northridge to Balboa Blvd, then turn south to 7900. Going via the 118 and the 405 is faster before 9 a.m. and slower through the middle of the day.

Why Do I Hear Small Airplanes Over Chatsworth?

Because Chatsworth sits at the Santa Susana Pass, the natural gap in the terrain at the north-west corner of the Valley. Light aircraft heading to Camarillo, Santa Paula, Santa Barbara or the practice area leave and return through it. The jets are not yours — Runway 16R is the preferred jet runway and those departures climb out over the Sepulveda Basin, to the south.

Is There A Flight School In Chatsworth?

No, and there never has been one. The closest place you can actually be taught to fly is Van Nuys Airport, a straight run east on Devonshire St and then south on Balboa Blvd.

Will I Fly Over Stoney Point And The Santa Susana Pass?

Yes, regularly. The north-west practice area sits out that way and the pass is on the route to Camarillo and the coast. From the air you can see the rail tunnels go into the rock on the Chatsworth side and come out on the Simi side, and the old wagon road over the pass shows as a pale scar.

Are Training Flights Noisy For The Neighborhood?

Pattern work happens at the airport, not over Chatsworth, and Van Nuys prohibits touch-and-go operations between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Aircraft over Chatsworth are normally transiting at cruise power rather than maneuvering.

Can I Book Lessons In The Evening After Work?

Yes. We are open 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week. A seventeen-minute drive means a two-hour lesson takes an evening rather than a Saturday, which is the difference between flying weekly and flying occasionally.

What Is The Cheapest Way To Start?

A 60-minute discovery flight at $229 is the usual first step — no tax, no booking fee, and the hour logs toward a certificate if you carry on. A 60-minute full-motion simulator session is $189 if you would rather try the controls on the ground first, and the in-person consultation costs nothing at all.
