Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

The nearest flight school to Agoura Hills is You Fly LA at Van Nuys Airport — 19.3 miles and about 27 minutes east on the 101, then north on Balboa Blvd to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406. Agoura Hills has no airfield, nor does Calabasas, Oak Park or Westlake Village, so Van Nuys is the field this whole eastern end of the Conejo Valley uses.

Unusually for a community this far west, there is no genuine second option to weigh. That makes the decision here simpler than it is for Thousand Oaks — and this page is mostly about what the drive, the airspace and the view actually look like from 91301.

Nineteen Miles East, One Freeway, No Grade

Pick up the 101 eastbound at Kanan Road or Reyes Adobe Road and stay on it — past Liberty Canyon, through Calabasas and Woodland Hills, along the base of the hills through Tarzana — and exit at Balboa Blvd in Encino. Turn north and drive roughly four and a half miles: under the freeway, through the Sepulveda Basin past Lake Balboa, across Victory, Vanowen and Sherman Way, and up the west side of the airport. That is the entire route.

What makes it manageable is what is not in it. There is no mountain pass, no grade and no second freeway — the whole run is flat valley floor at a steady elevation, so it behaves predictably. Off-peak it is a true 27 minutes. Eastbound between about seven and nine on a weekday morning it stretches to 40–55, and the westbound return between four and seven is the slower direction, which is why afternoon and evening lesson slots from Agoura Hills are worth booking at 6 PM rather than 4:30. We are open until 9:00 PM, seven days a week.

Ladyface, And Agoura Hills From Two Thousand Feet

Agoura Hills is a strip of town laid along the only flat corridor between two mountain ranges, and from the air that is instantly obvious in a way it never is from the 101. Departing Van Nuys and tracking west, you cross the Valley floor and Warner Center, and then the ground closes in from both sides — the Simi Hills and Chesebro Canyon to the north, the Santa Monica Mountains rising immediately to the south.

Ladyface Mountain is the reference point. It stands on its own at the west end of town where Kanan Road meets the freeway, a steep isolated cone with the 101 curving around its foot, and it is the single most recognizable natural landmark between the Valley and the Conejo Grade. Pilots use it the way they use a water tower. From above you can see the whole ridge trail up it, and how narrow the gap really is that the freeway squeezes through.

South of the town the country opens into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Paramount Ranch reads as pale grassland and oak scattered along the valley floor off Cornell Road, with the burn scar of the 2018 Woolsey Fire still legible across the hills around it and the regrowth coming back in patches. East of that, Malibu Creek State Park spreads either side of the gorge, with the reservoir at Malibou Lake and the volcanic outcrops above it. Then the ridge tops out — and drops. Follow Kanan Road south through the tunnels in your head and the aircraft does it in about three minutes: chaparral, then the last ridge, then nothing but the Pacific with Point Dume standing out into it. Grid to wilderness to open ocean in under ten minutes of flying is the thing people remember from a first flight out here.

There Is No Second Airfield, Which Simplifies The Decision

Communities further west spend real energy weighing Van Nuys against Camarillo. From Agoura Hills that comparison does not arise: Camarillo sits beyond Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and the Conejo Grade, so reaching it means driving past the entire Conejo Valley and dropping seven hundred feet down the grade before you land anywhere. Every mile west adds time; every mile east is already on your way. Our page on flight school near Thousand Oaks works through that trade for people who live further out. For a single first flight rather than a course, see a discovery flight near Calabasas and a discovery flight near Thousand Oaks.

Van Nuys is Class D, tower-controlled, with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet — sitting at 802 feet elevation beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B. From your first hours you are talking to a controller and fitting into genuinely busy airspace rather than an empty field, which is the harder and more useful way to learn. It also carries the deepest maintenance, avionics and fuel infrastructure of any general aviation airport in the region. Our page on flight training at Van Nuys Airport takes the airspace apart layer by layer.

Agoura Hills is a true 27 minutes off-peak, with no second airfield to weigh up. One drive, one decision, and an hour at the controls at the end of it.

Old Agoura, Kanan Road, And What 91301 Actually Books

Agoura Hills is a community of roughly 19,721 people with a median household income near $171,300, and that shows up in the booking mix rather than in the volume. The most common first booking from 91301 is not the entry-level flight — it is the Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight at $499 for 60 minutes, $649 for 90 and $799 for 120 for one flyer ($599 / $849 / $1,049 with a passenger), or the Malibu Coast Discovery Flight For Two at $299 / $399 / $499, which flies exactly the Kanan corridor described above. Weight limits are 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined in the Cirrus, 180 lb and 360 lb in the Piper Warrior.

The other thing 91301 buys is gift certificates — a flight is a workable answer for someone who already owns things, and a certificate avoids picking a date on a calendar you cannot see. Old Agoura, north of the freeway, is horse country: split-rail fencing, trailers in driveways, and riders on the Chesebro trails. It produces a particular kind of student, in our experience — people already used to a licensed skill that rewards weekly practice and does not forgive a six-week gap. That instinct is exactly right about flying. Two lessons a week produces a certificate faster and for less total money than one, because less of each hour goes to recovering ground that went stale.

What It Costs From Agoura Hills

Discovery Flight For Two — Malibu Coast 60 / 90 / 120 min $299 / $399 / $499
Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight 60 / 90 / 120 min $499 / $649 / $799 ($599 / $849 / $1,049 with a passenger)
Full-Motion Simulator 60 min, Redbird $189
Free In-Person Consultation at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108 $0
Private Pilot — Standard 40 hours, Part 61 minimum $10,400
Instrument Rating add-on rating $11,700
Aircraft / Cirrus, per hour standard fleet / SR22T $179 / $579 in a package
Instructor, per hour flight or ground $110

Every figure is the true total: no tax and no booking fee — $229 is the total. If training in the Cirrus is tempting (add it to any package at +$400 per hour, for as many hours as you choose), the honest test is whether you intend to own or routinely fly an SR22T; if not, Private Pilot Standard at $10,400 earns the identical certificate and you can transition later. We will tell you which you are at a free consultation. See also what flight school costs in Los Angeles. Price is only one of the things worth scoring; how the Los Angeles flight schools compare covers the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Agoura Hills?

About 19.3 miles and roughly 27 minutes off-peak. Take the 101 east to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then north about four and a half miles to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406.

Is There A Flight School In Agoura Hills?

No. Agoura Hills has no airfield, and neither do Calabasas, Oak Park or Westlake Village. Van Nuys Airport is the nearest field with a full training fleet, a straight run east on the 101.

Should I Consider Camarillo Instead?

Not from Agoura Hills. Camarillo sits beyond Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and the Conejo Grade, so you would drive past the whole Conejo Valley and down the grade to reach it. Van Nuys is closer and in the direction traffic already flows.

Can I Fly Over Ladyface, Malibu Creek And The Coast?

Yes. A westbound departure puts Ladyface Mountain, Paramount Ranch and Malibu Creek State Park under the wing within a few minutes, and following the Kanan corridor south crosses the Santa Monica Mountains ridge to the Pacific at Point Dume.

How Much Is A Flight, And Are There Hidden Fees?

A 60-minute discovery flight is $229, the Malibu Coast flight for two is $299, and the Cirrus SR22 is $499 for one flyer or $599 with a passenger. There is no tax and no booking fee — the listed price is the total you pay.

How Often Do I Need To Fly To Make Progress?

Twice a week is the target. Two lessons a week produces a certificate faster and for less total money than one, because less of each hour goes to recovering what went stale between flights. At 27 minutes each way, that is a schedule Agoura Hills residents can keep.
