Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

If you have been looking for airplane rides near Thousand Oaks, here is the one where the rider flies. You Fly LA is at Van Nuys Airport, twenty-eight miles east on the 101, 30 to 38 minutes from Thousand Oaks Blvd and Moorpark Rd when the freeway is moving. For $229 you spend 60 minutes in the left seat of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor beside you, and the westbound leg brings you back toward the Conejo Valley: over the Warner Center towers, across the Santa Monica Mountains toward Boney Mountain, and on the 90-minute flight out to the Malibu coast and along it.

Quick Answer: From Thousand Oaks a discovery flight costs $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 and $399 for 120 at Van Nuys Airport, 30 to 38 minutes east on the 101 off-peak (45 to 60 at 8 AM). You fly the airplane between takeoff and landing; 90 minutes is the length we suggest from here, because it reaches the coast.

Twenty-Eight Miles Of The 101, Eastbound

The drive is one road. 101 east from Thousand Oaks through Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Woodland Hills to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then north on Balboa for just under four miles. Twenty-eight miles, thirty to forty minutes when the freeway is moving.

When it is not moving, it is because you are traveling in the commute direction. Eastbound 101 out of the Conejo Valley between about 6:30 and 9:30 on a weekday is the heavy flow, and westbound between 3:30 and 7:00 is the return — so a morning booking has a slow drive out, and a late-afternoon booking has a slow drive home. Mid-morning through early afternoon is the clean window, and weekends are a straightforward thirty minutes.

From Newbury Park add five or six minutes at the start. From Westlake Village subtract three or four. From the north side of town, the 23 down to the 101 is the connector, and it is rarely the problem.

Why Conejo Valley Residents Fly From Van Nuys

The honest reason is the fleet and the airspace rather than the distance. Van Nuys is a tower-controlled Class D field with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet — sitting beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B. That combination means a first hour here involves real radio work and real traffic rather than an empty circuit, which is worth something even if you never fly again, and worth a great deal if you do. More about the field is on Van Nuys Airport (KVNY).

The second reason is what it opens up. From Van Nuys, a discovery flight can go west over the mountains to Malibu, south-east to the Hollywood Sign and downtown, or north over the Santa Susanas — and from Thousand Oaks you are buying access to a much larger map than your own valley. The Thousand Oaks flight school page covers the longer-term version of that argument.

What You'll See From Thousand Oaks' Side Of The Route

Two of the route's landmarks are on the Conejo Valley side of the map: the Warner Center towers you cross heading west, and the Malibu coast beyond the mountains south of you. The standard loop, landmark by landmark, is on our airplane rides page, and the shoreline in detail on the Malibu coast flight.

A westbound leg from Van Nuys puts the Conejo Valley at the far end of the flight, and the shape of the trip is a good one: out across the Valley, over the ridge, and then a long look back at your own side of the county line.

The Simi Hills come first on the right, with Ahmanson Ranch and the open grassland of the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon preserve on their south flank. Then the 101 corridor itself, which from the air is a thin line threading between hills — the reason the Conejo Valley feels separate from Los Angeles becomes geometrically obvious. Westlake Lake and Lake Sherwood show as two very different pieces of water, one engineered into a suburb and one tucked into a canyon.

To the south-west the Santa Monica Mountains rise toward Boney Mountain and the Point Mugu State Park high country, which from Thousand Oaks is a familiar skyline and from an airplane is a genuine mountain range dropping into the sea. On a clear afternoon the coast beyond it runs from Point Mugu down past Zuma and Point Dume, with the Channel Islands sitting off the horizon. Ninety minutes at $299 is the length that does that justice; sixty at $229 reaches the ridge and turns.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

You fly it; that is the whole idea. Budget two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight, and plan the drive around the 101 commute. A fuller description is on the discovery flight explained.

  1. One Road, The 101 East

Through Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Woodland Hills to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then just under four miles north. Book between mid-morning and early afternoon to miss both commutes. Parking is free at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108; arrive fifteen minutes early.

  2. A Table Briefing

Five minutes or so on what the controls do, what you will watch on the panel and the plan, which from Thousand Oaks usually means the westbound leg toward home.

  3. The Preflight Walk-Round

You and the instructor go round the airplane with a checklist: fuel, oil, tires and control surfaces, exactly as it is done before every flight.

  4. Takeoff

From the right seat the instructor handles the radios and the runway while you follow through on the yoke; once the airplane is established in the climb, it is yours.

  5. West Toward The Conejo Valley

Climbs, turns, holding an altitude, all flown by you: the Simi Hills on the right, the 101 corridor threading between the hills, Westlake Lake and Lake Sherwood, and the Santa Monica Mountains rising toward Boney Mountain.

  6. Back To Van Nuys, Into The Logbook

The instructor lands, you debrief, and the hour is logged as dual instruction received toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum. Enrolling within 24 hours credits 100% of it toward training.

Sixty, Ninety Or One Hundred And Twenty

From this far west the length question matters more than it does for someone in Van Nuys, because of the drive. Sixty minutes is a complete first lesson and the right choice if you are unsure how you will feel in a small airplane. Ninety is the one most Conejo Valley bookings choose, because it reaches the coast and gives you time to fly rather than sightsee. A hundred and twenty is for people treating this as hour one of training.

For two people: $299, $399 and $499 on the Malibu Coast or Downtown Los Angeles routes, and $599, $849 and $1,049 in the Cirrus SR22 with a passenger ($499, $649 and $799 for one flyer).

Weight Limits And Requirements

The Piper Warrior takes 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined. The Cirrus SR22 takes 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined. These come from the aircraft and do not change with flight length.

You need photo ID. You do not need an FAA medical certificate, because the instructor is pilot in command, and you do not need any experience. There is no minimum age; under-18s need a parent or guardian to sign.

Weather On Both Sides Of The Hills

The Conejo Valley gets the marine layer earlier and deeper than the San Fernando Valley does, because it is closer to the ocean and lower on the western approach. In May and June your morning can be gray while Van Nuys is already clear — the reverse of what most of our students experience. Do not cancel your own flight from your own driveway; call us on (818) 330-1318.

In high summer the airport is hotter than you are, and heat raises density altitude, which means a slower climb and bumpier air in the afternoon. Weather cancellations cost nothing and free rescheduling applies up to 24 hours before your slot for any reason: see the weather and cancellation policy.

That is the live report from Van Nuys, which can be clear while your driveway is gray. If the tile has not loaded, call or text (818) 330-1318 before you decide anything.

Give It As A Gift From Thousand Oaks

Because of the drive, a gift from the Conejo Valley works best as the longer flight. $299 buys 90 minutes for one person, enough to reach the coast and fly it rather than glimpse it, and $399 buys the 90-minute Malibu Coast flight for two, with one person at the controls and the other on the intercom. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate covers either, in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049, delivered by email within minutes.

There are no blackout dates and the certificate never expires, so the person you give it to can book a mid-morning slot that misses both commutes. For someone ready to train, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons. All of it is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. Leave the 101 at Balboa Blvd in Encino and drive just under four miles north. Navigate to the street address, not "Van Nuys Airport", because the airport has several gates spread around the field; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.

How Long Is The Drive From Thousand Oaks At Rush Hour?

Eastbound 101 between about 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday is the heavy flow: 45 to 60 minutes from Thousand Oaks Blvd, against 30 to 38 off-peak. Westbound between 3:30 and 7 PM is the return, so a late-afternoon booking has a slow drive home.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes. The Malibu Coast and Downtown flights for two are $299, $399 and $499 for 60, 90 and 120 minutes; in the Cirrus SR22 a passenger makes it $599, $849 and $1,049. One person flies from the left seat and the other rides in the back on the intercom.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

Check this before a drive of this length: the Piper Warrior's limit is 180 lb a person and 360 lb in total, the Cirrus SR22's 200 lb and 400 lb, whatever the flight length. There is no minimum age, provided the person flying can see over the panel and wear a headset, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian's signature.

Why Van Nuys Rather Than Somewhere Closer?

Because Van Nuys is a Class D field with a control tower and parallel runways under the Burbank Class C, a first hour there involves real radio work and real traffic, and from there a flight can go west to Malibu, south-east to the Hollywood Sign or north over the Santa Susanas.

Which Flight Length Should I Pick?

From the Conejo Valley we suggest ninety minutes: it gets you to the coast, with time to fly the airplane rather than just sightsee. Sixty reaches the ridge and turns.

It Is Gray Here. Should I Cancel?

Not from your driveway. In May and June the Conejo Valley can be gray while Van Nuys is already clear, the reverse of what most of our students see; call (818) 330-1318 and we will tell you.
