Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

Plane rides near Calabasas tend to mean sitting in the back of someone else's airplane. On a discovery flight you sit in the front and fly it. You Fly LA is at Van Nuys Airport, sixteen miles east on the 101, 20 to 26 minutes from Calabasas Rd off-peak, and for $229 you get 60 minutes in the pilot's seat of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor teaching beside you. Then the route turns back toward you: across the west Valley past the Warner Center towers, over your own canyon, and over the ridge at Malibu Canyon, where the Pacific opens up almost at once.

Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Calabasas costs $229 for 60 minutes at Van Nuys Airport, 20 to 26 minutes east on the 101 (32 to 42 at 8 AM eastbound). You fly the airplane, sixty minutes reaches the Malibu coast and back, and the Malibu Coast flight for two is $299 for 60 minutes or $399 for 90.

What You'll See From Calabasas' Side Of The Route

Three route landmarks frame the Calabasas flight: the Warner Center towers you cross on the way west, Van Nuys Airport behind you, and the Malibu coast just over your own ridge. The coastline itself is covered on the Malibu coast flight, and the whole loop, landmark by landmark, on our airplane rides page.

Geography does something useful for Calabasas that it does not do for most of Los Angeles. You are already at the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains rather than behind them, which means the coast is not a long leg at the end of a flight — it is about four minutes beyond your own house.

That is why the two-person Malibu Coast route reads as the local flight from here. Leaving Van Nuys westbound, the airplane crosses the west Valley, comes over Calabasas, and then over the ridge at Malibu Canyon, and the Pacific is simply there. Malibu Creek State Park is directly below on the way across — the rock formations, the lake, the long valley the creek cuts through. Calabasas Peak and the Cold Creek canyons stand just to the south, and the grid of Old Town Calabasas and the Commons sits at the foot of them where Mulholland Hwy meets Calabasas Rd.

Once you cross, the coastline runs both ways: Malibu Pier and the point at Pepperdine to the east, Zuma and Point Dume to the west. On a clear winter afternoon the Channel Islands are on the horizon. Sixty minutes reaches the water and comes back; ninety lets you fly the coastline instead of glimpsing it.

Sixteen Miles East On The 101

The drive is one freeway and one street. 101 east from Calabasas Pkwy or Las Virgenes Rd to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then north on Balboa for just under four miles to number 7900. Sixteen miles, twenty to twenty-eight minutes off-peak.

The catch is the direction of the peak. Eastbound 101 out of Calabasas between roughly 7 and 9:30 in the morning is the heavy commute direction, and the stretch through Woodland Hills and Tarzana is where it stalls; a 10 am booking can turn into a forty-minute drive. Westbound in the evening is the same problem in reverse, which matters for the trip home rather than the trip out. Mid-morning and early afternoon slots are the easy ones from Calabasas, and weekends are trivial.

Calabasas To Van Nuys Airport
From Route Off-Peak 8 AM Eastbound
Calabasas Rd & Parkway Calabasas 101 east, Balboa Blvd north 20–26 min 32–42 min
Las Virgenes Rd & Mulholland Hwy Las Virgenes north to 101 east 24–30 min 36–46 min
Calabasas Hills / Mountain View Down to the 101, east to Balboa 22–28 min 34–44 min
West Calabasas near Valley Circle Valley Circle north, Victory Blvd east 24–30 min 28–34 min

That last row is the local's route. If the 101 is red, Valley Circle Blvd north and then Victory Blvd east crosses the west Valley on surface streets and ignores the freeway completely.

The Two-Person Malibu Coast Route

The named two-person flights are $299 for 60 minutes, $399 for 90 and $499 for 120, on either the Malibu Coast or the Downtown Los Angeles route. From Calabasas the coast version is the one that uses your geography: you overfly your own canyon on the way out, and the second person has a proper seat and a proper view rather than a jump seat.

If you would rather fly alone, the single-seat discovery flight is $229, $299 and $399 for the three lengths. And the Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight — side-yoke, glass panel, whole-airframe parachute — is $499, $649 and $799 for one flyer, or $599, $849 and $1,049 with a passenger.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

An hour of flight time is the headline, but the product is a first lesson, and two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight is the honest figure. There is a longer version on what a discovery flight actually is.

  1. 101 East, Or Valley Circle If It Is Red

The 101 east to the Balboa Blvd exit and just under four miles north: 20 to 26 minutes off-peak, 32 to 42 at 8 AM. If the freeway is red, Valley Circle Blvd north and Victory Blvd east holds at 28 to 34. Parking is free at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108; be there fifteen minutes early.

  2. The Briefing

About five minutes at a table on the controls, the instruments and the plan, which from Calabasas usually means westbound, back over your own hills to the coast.

  3. Preflight The Warrior

A walk round the airplane with your instructor: fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires. It is the inspection every pilot does before every flight, and you do it too.

  4. Takeoff, Then You Have Control

The instructor handles the tower and the takeoff with your hands following, and passes the airplane to you once the climb is established.

  5. Back West Over Malibu Creek

You fly the climbs, turns and level flight across the west Valley, over Calabasas and Malibu Creek State Park, and over the ridge to the Pacific. The instructor stays on the controls with you throughout.

  6. Debrief And Logbook

Back at Van Nuys the instructor lands and you talk through what you flew. The hour goes into your logbook as dual instruction received, counts toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum, and is credited in full if you enroll within 24 hours.

Aircraft, Weight And Requirements

The Piper Warrior PA-28-161 is the standard airplane — low wing, four seats, honest controls. Limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined. The Cirrus SR22 allows 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined.

You need a photo ID and nothing else. No experience, no FAA medical certificate — the instructor is pilot in command — and no minimum age, though a parent or guardian must sign for anyone under 18. Van Nuys is a tower-controlled Class D field beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B, which is described on our page about KVNY, the airport you fly from.

The arithmetic behind each figure is on what a discovery flight costs, and the full training picture for the area is on the Calabasas flight school page.

Weather Windows

Calabasas residents know the marine layer better than most inland communities, because it comes up the canyons from Malibu. In May and June it can hold over the crest well into the late morning, and when it is sitting on your ridge it is usually also sitting on the Valley. Those are the flights that get moved.

Midsummer is the opposite problem: the heat raises density altitude, the airplane climbs less eagerly, and the air over the Santa Monica Mountains turns rough in the afternoon. Early and late slots are noticeably smoother. If we cancel for weather you pay nothing, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead — our weather and cancellation policy has the detail.

The tile is the live Van Nuys report; when the layer is on your ridge it is usually on the Valley too. If it does not load, text (818) 330-1318 and we will tell you what the field is reporting.

Give It As A Gift From Calabasas

From Calabasas the gift that uses the geography is the Malibu Coast flight for two: $299 for 60 minutes or $399 for 90, one person at the controls and the second in a proper seat with a proper view, over the canyon you both live in and out to Point Dume. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate covers it, or any other flight, in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049. It is emailed within minutes, has no blackout dates, can be passed on to someone else and never expires, so it can wait for a clear winter afternoon with the Channel Islands on the horizon.

$229 is the 60-minute flight for one, and $499 also covers an hour in the Cirrus SR22 ($599 with a passenger). For someone starting a certificate, Flight Training Credit comes in $500, $1,000 and $2,500. Every amount is on our flight gift certificates page.
