Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

An introductory flight near Woodland Hills starts with the easiest drive in the Valley: Victory Blvd east from Warner Center for about nine miles, 19 to 24 minutes, then a short jog north on Balboa to Van Nuys Airport. You Fly LA flies from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, and for $229 you get 60 minutes in the pilot's seat of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor teaching from the right seat. From the west end of the Valley the view is different: the Warner Center towers are your first landmark, the ridge you look at from Ventura Blvd is the one the airplane crosses, and the Malibu coast is on the other side of it.

Quick Answer: From Woodland Hills a discovery flight is $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 or $399 for 120, at Van Nuys Airport 19 to 24 minutes east on Victory Blvd with no freeway needed. You fly the airplane between takeoff and landing, and 90 minutes gives you real time over the water.

Warner Center To The Ramp In Twenty Minutes

Woodland Hills is the west end of the Valley and Van Nuys Airport is the middle of it, so the trip is a straight run east on any of three parallel streets. Victory Blvd from Topanga Canyon Blvd to Balboa is about nine miles and the most reliable; Vanowen St and Sherman Way do the same job a few blocks north. Then it is a short jog north on Balboa to number 7900. Twenty minutes off-peak, twenty-six or twenty-eight in the evening.

The 101 is available and is usually the slower answer from here, because the Balboa Blvd exit is in Encino, four miles south of the airport, so the freeway route takes you along the busiest road in the west Valley and then back north. The exception is a Sunday morning, when the 101 east and then Balboa north is a genuinely quick fifteen minutes. On a weekday the eastbound 101 out of Woodland Hills between 7 and 9 is the heaviest direction in the west Valley, and Victory Blvd beats it comfortably.

Woodland Hills To 7900 Balboa Blvd
From Route Distance Typical Drive
Warner Center (Topanga & Victory) Victory Blvd east, Balboa north ~9 mi 19–24 min
Ventura Blvd & Topanga Canyon Topanga north to Victory, east ~11 mi 22–28 min
Woodland Hills south of Mulholland Dr Down to Ventura, north on Winnetka, Victory east ~12 mi 26–32 min
Pierce College area (Winnetka & Victory) Victory Blvd east ~7 mi 15–20 min

What You'll See From Woodland Hills' Side Of The Route

Three of the route's landmarks belong to the west Valley: the Warner Center towers on your own skyline, Van Nuys Airport at the middle of the Valley, and the Malibu coast just over the ridge. From Woodland Hills the coast is the short way round, which is why the westbound flight suits you; the complete loop, landmark by landmark, is on our airplane rides page, and the shoreline itself on the Malibu coast flight.

Living at the west end of the Valley changes which half of Los Angeles is close. From Van Nuys, the westbound route crosses the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu Canyon, and from Woodland Hills that is home territory: the ridge you look at from Ventura Blvd is the same ridge the airplane goes over, and the far side of it is the Malibu coastline.

On the way out you pass over the ground you drive on. The Warner Center towers at Topanga and Victory are the only skyline the west Valley has and they read as a cluster of white blocks from two miles up the road. Pierce College shows as a rectangle of farmland in the middle of a city — the one place in the west Valley where the street grid gives way to open fields. Topanga Canyon Blvd climbs into the mountains and disappears, and from the air you can follow it all the way to where it comes out at the sea.

Then the crest, with Calabasas Peak and the folds of Malibu Creek State Park below, and after that the Pacific — usually Malibu Pier and Zuma to the west, Santa Monica Bay to the east, and on a clear winter afternoon the Channel Islands sitting on the horizon. Turn the other way and the flight goes east instead, toward the Hollywood Sign and downtown, which takes longer from this side. Both options are described on the full Los Angeles discovery flight rundown.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

It is a first flying lesson sold by the hour, and the hour sits inside about two hours at the airport. The whole sequence is spelled out on what the hour involves; this is the Woodland Hills version.

  1. Victory Blvd, Straight East

From Topanga and Victory it is about nine miles to Balboa, then north to number 7900: 19 to 24 minutes, or 15 to 20 from the Pierce College end. Skip the 101, whose Balboa exit is south of the airport. Parking is free on site; come fifteen minutes early with a photo ID.

  2. The Briefing

Five minutes or so at a table: what the controls do, how the airplane climbs and turns, and which way you are going. From the west Valley the usual choice is over the mountains toward the coast, or the Valley and the ridge on a 60-minute flight.

  3. Inspect The Airplane With Your Instructor

The walk-round preflight you do rather than watch: fuel drained and checked, oil level, tires, and every control surface moved by hand.

  4. Takeoff, Then The Hand-Over

Your instructor handles the tower and the takeoff, with your hands following on the yoke, and gives you the airplane once it is established in the climb.

  5. Head West Toward Home

Climbing, turning, holding a heading, feeling how much of the airplane is rudder and how much is yoke. The Warner Center towers, the open fields of Pierce College and Topanga Canyon Blvd winding into the mountains all pass under the wing.

  6. Debrief And Your Logbook

The instructor lands, you go over the flight, and the time is logged as dual instruction received in a logbook with your name in it. It counts toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum, and enrolling within 24 hours credits 100% of the flight toward training.

The Aircraft And The Weight Limits

The standard flight is in a Piper Warrior PA-28-161 — a low-wing four-seater with honest handling, which is what you want for a first hour. The premium option is the Cirrus SR22, which takes one passenger, with a side-yoke, a large glass panel and an airframe parachute.

The limits belong to the aircraft: 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Warrior, 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined in the Cirrus. No FAA medical certificate is required, since the instructor is pilot in command. There is no minimum age, but anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian signature. Bring photo ID.

Choosing Between The Valley, Downtown And Malibu Routes

For one person, sixty minutes at $229 covers the Valley and the mountains and reaches the coast briefly; ninety at $299 gives you real time over the water; a hundred and twenty at $399 lets you run the coastline properly and still practice on the way home.

For two people there are two named routes at the same prices — $299, $399 and $499 for 60, 90 and 120 minutes. From Woodland Hills the Malibu Coast flight is the obvious one, because it is your own ridge and the ocean immediately behind it. The Downtown Los Angeles flight is the better pick if what you actually want is the skyline and the Hollywood Hills. The Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight runs $499, $649 and $799 for one flyer, or $599, $849 and $1,049 with a passenger.

Marine Layer, Heat And Rescheduling

Woodland Hills has a reputation for being the hottest spot in the Valley and it is deserved, which matters here for one specific reason: heat raises density altitude, and a hot afternoon means a slower climb and rougher air over the mountains. In July and August, a 10 am flight is a materially better experience than a 3 pm one.

The opposite problem arrives in May and June, when the marine layer comes over the Santa Monica Mountains overnight and sits on the west Valley into the late morning. Flights in that window get moved more often than at any other time of year. You pay nothing if the weather cancels, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead — see the weather and cancellation policy. There is also a $189 full-motion simulator hour if you would rather not waste the trip.

The tile above reads the live Van Nuys observation, which is the number that matters for your slot, not the thermometer at Warner Center. If it does not load, call or text (818) 330-1318 for the conditions at the field.

Give It As A Gift From Woodland Hills

For a west Valley couple the present almost chooses itself: the Malibu Coast flight for two crosses the ridge they see every day and puts the Pacific in the windshield, at $299 for 60 minutes or $399 for 90. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate covers it, or any other flight, in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049. It arrives by email within minutes, has no blackout dates, can be given on to someone else and never expires, so nobody has to fly on a hundred-degree August afternoon just because the card has a date on it.

$229 is one person for an hour. For someone who already wants the certificate, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons. All of it is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, on the airport's west side. From Woodland Hills you arrive along Victory Blvd and turn north on Balboa. Use the street address in your map app, not "Van Nuys Airport", which can route you to a gate on the far side of the field.

How Long Is The Drive From Woodland Hills At Rush Hour?

About twenty minutes off-peak and twenty-six or twenty-eight in the evening on Victory Blvd. From 7 to 9 AM the 101 heading east from Woodland Hills carries the west Valley's heaviest traffic, and Victory is comfortably quicker.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes, and from Woodland Hills the Malibu Coast flight for two is the one to book: $299 for 60 minutes, with one person flying from the left seat and the other in the back on the intercom. The Downtown route costs the same, and the Cirrus SR22 is $599 for 60 minutes with a passenger. If you both want to fly, book a flight each.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

Anyone can fly who can see over the panel and wear a headset comfortably; there is no minimum age, and a parent or guardian signs the paperwork for under-18s. Weight and balance sets the other limit: 180 lb per seat and 360 lb in total in the Piper Warrior, 200 lb and 400 lb in the Cirrus SR22.

Should I Take The 101 Or Victory Blvd?

Victory Blvd. The 101's exit for Balboa Blvd is down in Encino, four miles below the airport, so the freeway puts you on the west Valley's busiest road and then sends you four miles back north on Balboa. Sunday mornings are the exception: then the 101 and Balboa take about fifteen minutes.

Can I Fly Over Malibu On A Discovery Flight?

Yes. Sixty minutes reaches the coast briefly; ninety gives you real time over the water, and from Woodland Hills the Malibu Coast flight for two is the obvious pick because it is your own ridge with the ocean behind it.

What Time Of Year Is Worst For Cancellations?

May and June: the marine layer rolls over the Santa Monica Mountains at night and can sit on the west Valley until late morning. In July and August the issue is heat, so a 10 AM slot beats a 3 PM one.
