Why Van Nuys
Why Angelenos Learn At Van Nuys
Los Angeles is a big city to learn to fly in, and the airport you pick shapes every lesson. Van Nuys Airport is a towered Class D field in the San Fernando Valley, beneath the Burbank Class C and just north of the Los Angeles Class B. It is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, so you work with a controller from the start and learn LA airspace in your first hours rather than later.
Training has to fit around a job in this city. We fly from 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, so a weekday evening and a weekend morning are both real options. As a Part 61 school, we let your lessons follow your schedule rather than a fixed calendar.
An Honest Word About The Drive
From most of the Valley, Van Nuys is a trip on surface streets. From the Westside it is the 405 over the Sepulveda Pass, a different drive at 5 PM than at 11 AM, so allow extra time between 4 and 7 on weekdays and call from the road if you are running late. In the South Bay and Orange County, other airports are closer: Torrance and Hawthorne in the South Bay, Fullerton and John Wayne in Orange County. From that far out, a weekly lesson rarely makes sense, but a compressed block such as the seven-day multi-engine rating can. Accelerated flight training explains how that works.

Cost
What Flight Training In Los Angeles Costs
There are two ways to pay for flight training: by the hour, or as a package. Our published hourly rates are $179 for the aircraft, $110 for flight instruction, $110 for ground instruction and $120 for the full-motion simulator. A package puts every one of those hours in writing before you start, at a price that does not move.
| Package | Price | Hours Logged |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10,400 | 40 |
| Comprehensive | $15,400 | 60 |
| Premium | $22,000 | 80 |
Every Private Pilot package includes books and training materials, and each has a payment plan from $2,500 down: then 4 × $1,975 a month for Standard, 6 × $2,150 for Comprehensive or 10 × $1,950 for Premium. Some costs sit outside any school’s course price: the FAA knowledge test, the examiner’s fee for your checkride, your medical and a headset. The free consultation covers those, with a realistic plan for how often you can actually fly. The line-by-line breakdown is on flight school cost in Los Angeles, and payment options are on flight training financing.

Flying Schools In LA
Flight School, Aviation School, Flight Academy
Flight school, flying school, pilot school, flight academy: most Los Angeles schools use the words interchangeably, and almost all of them mean training for FAA pilot certificates, which is what we do. Two words carry a real distinction. “Aviation school” is broader, because it can also mean a maintenance technician school or a college degree program. “Academy” has no regulatory meaning at all.
How a school operates matters more than its name. You Fly LA is a Part 61 school. If you need an M-1 student visa, you need a Part 141 school instead, and we will tell you so. You Fly LA does not accept the GI Bill. Part 61 flight school in Los Angeles explains what that means for your schedule, and how to choose a flight school in Los Angeles gives you the questions to ask on a tour.

Getting Started
What You Need Before Your First Lesson
Less than most people expect. A first lesson needs no medical certificate, no student pilot certificate and no experience, because your instructor is the pilot in command. Bring a government photo ID and wear closed-toe shoes. The rest comes later, before you fly solo:
- An FAA medical certificate from an aviation medical examiner
- A student pilot certificate, a free FAA application we complete with you
- English: the FAA requires you to read, speak, write and understand it
- TSA clearance first, if you are not a US citizen
- Age 17 for the Private Pilot certificate itself; a lesson has no minimum age, and under 18 a parent or guardian signs
Not a US citizen? For certificate training we handle the TSA paperwork with you here at Van Nuys, and international student pilots walks through the process.
