Guaranteed Paid CFI Job

A paid flight instructor job with You Fly LA while you build toward the 1,500 hours an airline requires.

You finish the program with the CFI, CFII and MEI certificates at around 260 logged hours, then instruct at Van Nuys at $48,000 a year while you build toward the 1,500 hours an unrestricted ATP requires.

Full-time instructors typically log 60 to 100 hours a month, so the climb from about 300 hours to 1,500 usually takes 12 to 20 months, and you are paid for every one of them.

The Roadmap

Zero To The Flight Deck, Stage By Stage

About nine months of full-time training from your first lesson to CFI, CFII and MEI, then paid instructing toward the airlines. Tap a stage.

  1. Stage 1 / 8Before

    Medical & Discovery Flight

Two things first, in this order: a first-class FAA medical, then a $229 discovery flight. Together they answer whether you can and whether you want to.

    • First-class medical: the one gate that can end the plan
    • Discovery flight: 60 minutes in the left seat over Los Angeles
    • TSA clearance first if you are not a US citizen or national
  2. Stage 2 / 8PPL

    Private Pilot

Control, landings, navigation and emergencies from the Van Nuys ramp, talking to the tower from lesson one.

    • First solo
    • Cross-countries, day and night
    • Private pilot checkride
  3. Stage 3 / 8IR

    Instrument Rating

Flying by instruments alone: holds, approaches and real IFR over Los Angeles, with part of the training in the full-motion simulator.

    • Instrument approaches to minimums
    • Procedures in the full-motion simulator
    • Instrument checkride
  4. Stage 4 / 8CPL

    Commercial Pilot

Commercial maneuvers flown to tight tolerances, plus the complex and high-performance endorsements that open advanced aircraft.

    • Complex endorsement
    • High-performance endorsement
    • Commercial single-engine checkride
  5. Stage 5 / 8ME

    Multi-Engine Rating

Engine-out procedures, VMC and the critical engine in the twin-engine Piper Seminole.

    • 10 hours of multi-engine time
    • Commercial multi-engine checkride
  6. Stage 6 / 8CFI

    Flight Instructor (CFI)

The certificate that turns the next 1,200 hours from an expense into an income: you learn to teach, not just to fly.

    • Spin endorsement
    • Fundamentals of instructing
    • CFI checkride
  7. Stage 7 / 8CFII · MEI~Month 9

    CFII & MEI

The instrument and multi-engine instructor ratings, so you can teach instrument and twin students as well.

    • Flight instructor, instrument (CFII)
    • Multi-engine instructor (MEI)
    • About 260 logged hours at the finish
  8. Stage 8 / 8AfterYear 1

    • 60 to 100 hours a month as a full-time instructor
    • Roughly 12 to 20 months from about 300 to 1,500 hours
    • The ATP-CTP and ATP checkride usually come with airline new-hire training

Career ladder figures as published in our program data; only the $48,000 instructor salary is You Fly LA's own. The median is US Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 wage data for airline pilots, copilots and flight engineers, as quoted on our airline program cost page. First-year airline pay sits well below the medians: the curve is flat for two or three years, then steep.

Airline Pilot Program: Your Questions

Still unsure? Call (818) 330-1318, 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week.

All Questions

About nine months of full-time training, from zero experience to CFI, CFII and MEI at around 260 logged hours. After that you build toward the 1,500 hours an airline requires as a paid instructor; at 60 to 100 hours a month that typically takes 12 to 20 months.

Every certificate and rating through MEI (Private, Instrument, Commercial Single and Multi, CFI, CFII and MEI), the Complex, High-Performance and Spin endorsements, the flight and ground instruction that goes with them, simulator time in the Redbird MCX and TD2, and books and materials: about 260 logged hours in all, with no tax and no booking fee.

Yes. Graduates of the Airline Pilot Career Program are guaranteed a paid CFI job with us at $48,000 a year while they build toward 1,500 hours, and a guaranteed airline interview. The terms are written into your enrollment agreement; go through them with us on a free consultation before you enroll.

FAA knowledge tests at approximately $175 each, examiner fees of roughly $800 to $1,000 for each of seven practical tests, the FAA medical examination, headset and gear, iPad and app subscriptions, and housing, transport and living costs. Budget around $7,000 to $8,000 of FAA and examiner costs on top of the program price.

Paid in full, with no tax and no booking fee; a $2,500 deposit followed by monthly installments set at enrollment; interest-free direct payments with us over up to 12 months; or financing from $2,500 down over up to 15 years, starting with a soft credit check that does not affect your credit score. Employer, cadet or scholarship funding can be combined with any of them.

Bought separately, the same certificates are $58,229 including a discovery flight. The $25,771 difference covers more flying than the sum of the individual course minimums, full-time aircraft and instructor capacity held for you across nine months, and the scheduling work of running seven practical tests in sequence.

Yes for an unrestricted ATP. A restricted ATP allows 1,000 hours with a qualifying four-year aviation degree, 1,250 with a qualifying associate degree, or 750 hours for qualifying military pilots.

No. Major US airlines no longer require a degree, though some still prefer one. A qualifying aviation degree does lower the ATP hour requirement, which is a real advantage.

A first-class FAA medical certificate. Get one before starting training, not after.

Yes through the commercial certificate, at two to three sessions a week over roughly 18 to 24 months. The hour-building phase is harder part time, because instructing 60 to 100 hours a month is close to a full-time job.

Yes, with a TSA Determination of Eligibility under 49 CFR part 1552 before flight training begins, and appropriate immigration status. The two are separate requirements and neither substitutes for the other. We are a Part 61 school and do not issue I-20s for student visas.

Airline hiring is cyclical and moves with the economy, retirements and fleet plans. Any specific claim about the market at the time you finish is a forecast, not a fact. Your airline interview is guaranteed; the hiring decision is always the airline's.

Two things, in this order: get a first-class medical, and take a discovery flight. Together they cost a few hundred dollars and answer the two questions, can you and do you want to, that decide whether the other $84,000 makes sense.
