Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

If you are looking for a Santa Monica flight school, the field to know about is Van Nuys Airport: You Fly LA is about 18.7 miles and roughly 26 minutes up the 405 from the Pier, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. That matters more than it used to, because Santa Monica Airport is scheduled to close on December 31, 2028, and anyone starting flight training in Santa Monica now needs to know that before they book anything.

Santa Monica is a city of about 91,169 people that has had an airport inside its borders since 1940. In roughly two years it will not. If you are searching for flying lessons here, that fact belongs at the top of the page rather than buried at the bottom of one. If you are further inland on the Westside the drive is shorter, and we have written it up separately for flying lessons in Westwood and flight school in Beverly Hills.

Quick Answer: Santa Monica Airport is scheduled to close on December 31, 2028, so more Westside students now train at Van Nuys, about 18.7 miles and 26 minutes up the 405 off-peak. Van Nuys is a towered Class D field with an 8,001-foot runway, we fly from 9 AM to 9 PM every day, and the private pilot certificate starts at $10,400. The first step is a $229 discovery flight.

First: Your Local Airport Is On A Clock

Santa Monica Airport (KSMO) is scheduled to close at the end of 2028 under a 2017 consent decree between the City of Santa Monica, the FAA and the Department of Justice. The City has reaffirmed that date publicly and is planning to convert the site to parkland under voter-approved Measure LC. Airport advocates continue to campaign against closure, so it is not over, but the City's position has not moved.

The practical read for a new student: a Private certificate started now is very likely to finish before the field closes — if you fly regularly. What you should not do is start somewhere on the assumption you will still be flying from that ramp in five years, or hand over a large prepaid balance to any operator on a short lease. We have written the long, source-by-source version of all of this on the Santa Monica Airport closure resource page, including what transfers if you move schools mid-training and how the alternative fields actually compare. It is written to be useful even if you choose a field other than ours.

Santa Monica To Van Nuys: The 405 Run

The drive is one freeway and one decision. You take the 10 east to the 405 north, climb through the Sepulveda Pass past the Getty, drop into the Valley, and exit at Roscoe Blvd — then west to Balboa Blvd and south to 7900. Off-peak that is a genuinely easy 26 minutes.

The decision is when. The Sepulveda Pass northbound between four and seven on a weekday is the worst stretch of road on this route by a wide margin, and it is worth reorganizing a lesson around rather than sitting in. Two workarounds Santa Monica students use constantly: book the morning slot — we open at 9:00 AM, and a 9 or 10 AM weekday lesson is a 26-minute drive in both directions — or take Sepulveda Blvd as the surface parallel through the pass when the freeway locks up. Sepulveda runs alongside the 405 the whole way over and is frequently faster in the worst hour.

Santa Monica To You Fly LA, 7900 Balboa Blvd, Van Nuys
Starting Point Route Distance Typical Drive
Santa Monica Pier / 90401 I-10 E to 405 N, exit Roscoe Blvd 18.7 mi 26–40 min
Wilshire Blvd & 26th St / 90403 San Vicente or Wilshire to 405 N ~17 mi 24–38 min
Mid-City Santa Monica / 90404 26th St north to the 405 N ~18 mi 25–38 min
Ocean Park / Sunset Park / 90405 Lincoln Blvd to I-10 E to 405 N ~20 mi 28–42 min

Twenty-six minutes each way is a real commute and we will not pretend otherwise. But it is a commute you can do twice a week, and twice a week is the variable that decides how much your certificate costs. Students who fly weekly or better finish faster and spend less, because less of every lesson goes to rebuilding what went stale. A Santa Monica student flying Tuesday morning and Saturday morning is on a materially cheaper path than one flying every other weekend from a field five minutes away. Our guide to flying classes in Los Angeles explains why lesson frequency, not the hourly rate, decides the total.

What You Fly Over Leaving Van Nuys Versus Leaving Santa Monica

The honest comparison. Departing Santa Monica, you are over the water almost immediately — that is the field's great gift and always has been. Departing Van Nuys, the coast is a few minutes further out, and what you get in exchange is the whole Valley, the mountains and the Basin behind you.

Off the runway at Van Nuys you are looking at the San Fernando Valley on a grid that runs to the San Gabriels, with the Sepulveda Basin — the same green hole you drove through — resolving into Lake Balboa, the golf courses and the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River. Turn southwest and the Santa Monica Mountains fill the windscreen, Mulholland tracing the ridgeline. You cross the Sepulveda Pass with the 405 threaded through it below and the Getty Center sitting on its own hill on the west side — travertine, unmistakable, and a completely different object from above than from the freeway.

Then the ridge drops and the whole Westside opens at once: Brentwood and Bel Air on the slopes, the grid running down to the water, and Santa Monica Bay filling the left half of the windscreen. The Santa Monica Pier is the obvious landmark — the wheel is visible from a long way out — with the beach running south to Venice and the marina, and north past Will Rogers toward the Palisades bluffs and Malibu. On a clear winter afternoon after a storm has scrubbed the air, you can see Catalina from over your own house.

Santa Monica residents almost always find their roof on the first flight. The coastline is a straight reference and the Pier tells you exactly where you are.

The Fleet, The Airspace, And What It Costs

Van Nuys is a Class D tower-controlled field with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet — sitting beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B, at a field elevation of 802 feet. From your first hours you are talking to a controller and fitting into busy airspace, which is the single best habit a Los Angeles pilot can build early. Our flight training at Van Nuys page takes the airspace apart layer by layer, and the airport page covers the field itself.

We train in Piper Warriors, the Diamond DA20, the Cessna 162 Skycatcher, the Piper Arrow and Seminole for complex and multi-engine work, and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo — plus a Redbird full-motion simulator at $120 an hour, which is the cheapest way to drill instrument procedure ever invented.

You Fly LA Prices — The Listed Price Is The Total
Item Detail Price
Discovery Flight 60 / 90 / 120 min, one person $229 / $299 / $399
Discovery Flight For Two — Malibu Coast 60 / 90 / 120 min $299 / $399 / $499
Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight 60 / 90 / 120 min $499 / $649 / $799 ($599 / $849 / $1,049 with a passenger)
Full-Motion Simulator 60 min $189
Free In-Person Consultation at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108 $0
Private Pilot — Standard 40 hours, Part 61 minimum $10,400
Sport Pilot 20-hour FAA minimum track $8,400
Instrument Rating add-on rating $11,700
Aircraft, per hour standard fleet $179
Instructor, per hour flight or ground $110

Those are true totals. Our booking products carry no tax and no booking fee — $229 is the total. For a Santa Monica household weighing this against other things $10,400 buys, our flight school cost page breaks down where the money actually goes, and flight training financing covers the payment side.

If the coast is the reason you want to fly, the Discovery Flight For Two — Malibu Coast at $299 for 60 minutes is the obvious first booking: two people, both seeing everything, out over the Santa Monica Mountains and down the shoreline you already live on. If you would rather start in a Piper on a standard route, the 60-minute discovery flight is $229. Either one logs toward your certificate if you continue — see what a discovery flight actually involves. The local version, with the drive and the coastal route, is a discovery flight from Santa Monica.

Weather, And Why The Valley Side Helps

Santa Monica pilots know the marine layer better than anyone. In May and June it can sit on the coastal fields into the early afternoon for days at a stretch. Van Nuys is on the far side of the Santa Monica Mountains, which means it burns off earlier and more reliably, and there are mornings in June when the Valley is clear and the coast is not. That is a genuine advantage for a student trying to keep a twice-a-week rhythm through late spring. It is not magic — Van Nuys gets its own weather, and summer afternoon heat pushes density altitude up at 802 feet — but across a year it means fewer canceled lessons. Our weather and cancellation policy explains how we handle the days it does not cooperate.

Current conditions at Van Nuys show above when the page loads. If they do not, the weather and cancellation policy explains how we decide whether a lesson goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is There A Flight School At Santa Monica Airport?

There are flight schools operating at Santa Monica Airport today, but the airport is scheduled to close on December 31, 2028 under a 2017 consent decree with the FAA, and tenants there are on limited-term leases. If you are starting training now, ask any school directly about its lease and what happens to your training after 2028.

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Santa Monica?

About 18.7 miles and roughly 26 minutes off-peak. Take the 10 east to the 405 north, over the Sepulveda Pass past the Getty, exit at Roscoe Blvd, then west to Balboa Blvd and south to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406.

Will Santa Monica Airport Closing Affect My Flight Training?

If you train regularly, a Private certificate started now will very likely be finished well before the end of 2028. The things to be careful about are large prepaid balances with operators on short-term leases, and assuming you will still be renting from that ramp years from now. Your logbook and hours are yours and transfer to any school.

How Much Is A Discovery Flight From Santa Monica?

$229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 and $399 for 120 in the standard aircraft, or $299 for the 60-minute Malibu Coast flight for two. There is no tax and no booking fee — the listed price is the total you pay.

What Will I See On A Flight From Van Nuys Toward Santa Monica?

The Sepulveda Basin and Lake Balboa within a couple of minutes, then the Santa Monica Mountains and Mulholland, the Sepulveda Pass with the Getty Center on its hill, and then the whole Westside opening onto Santa Monica Bay with the Pier, the beach south to Venice and the coast running north past the Palisades bluffs to Malibu.

Is The 405 Commute Worth It For Flying Lessons?

It is 26 minutes off-peak and considerably worse between four and seven on a weekday. Book morning slots when you can, or use Sepulveda Blvd as the surface parallel through the pass. Flying twice a week from Van Nuys costs less overall than flying every other weekend from somewhere closer, because less of each lesson goes to recovering skills that went stale.

Do I Need A Medical Certificate Before My First Lesson?

Not for a discovery flight — you can book that today with photo ID. You will need an FAA medical certificate and a student pilot certificate before you fly solo. Both are handled well before that point, and we walk you through the paperwork at the free consultation.

When Does Santa Monica Airport Close?

It is scheduled to close on December 31, 2028 under the 2017 consent decree between the City of Santa Monica, the FAA and the Department of Justice, and the City plans to turn the site into parkland under Measure LC. Airport advocates still campaign against the closure, but the City's position has not changed.

Where Can I Learn To Fly After Santa Monica Airport Closes?

At any of the remaining fields around Los Angeles. Van Nuys, 18.7 miles up the 405, is where many Westside students already train, and our Santa Monica Airport closure page compares the alternatives field by field, including what transfers if you change schools part-way through.
