If you live in Van Nuys, the intro flight lesson people drive across Los Angeles for starts eight to twelve minutes from your front door. You Fly LA flies from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406, on the west side of Van Nuys Airport, and from the Civic Center that is Sherman Way or Saticoy St west with no freeway at any point. For $229 you get 60 minutes in the left seat of a Piper Warrior, flying it yourself with a certificated instructor beside you, and the first thing under the wing is the neighborhood you drive through every day.
Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Van Nuys costs $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 and $399 for 120, from an airport 5 to 16 minutes from anywhere in Van Nuys or Valley Glen. You fly the airplane between takeoff and landing, and the hour goes into your own logbook as dual instruction.

Your Airport Is The One You Already Live Next To
Van Nuys Airport occupies roughly a square mile between Woodley Ave and Balboa Blvd, Sherman Way and Roscoe Blvd. Our building is on the Balboa side, so from anywhere in the 91406 the trip is a matter of blocks rather than freeways. From the Van Nuys Civic Center on Van Nuys Blvd it is about three miles west on Sherman Way or Saticoy St — eight to twelve minutes, and the only thing that slows it down is the signal timing on Woodley.
Nobody in Van Nuys needs the 405 or the 101 to get here, which is the quiet reason this works as a first flight. There is no version of the drive that collapses at 5:30 pm. If we call at 4:40 because a 5:30 slot has opened, a Van Nuys resident can take it.
| Starting From | Route | Typical Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Van Nuys Blvd & Victory Blvd (91401) | Victory west, Balboa north | 10–14 min |
| Van Nuys Civic Center (91401) | Sherman Way west to Balboa | 8–12 min |
| Sherman Way & Woodley Ave (91406) | Sherman Way west, north on Balboa | 5–7 min |
| Lake Balboa / Balboa & Victory (91406) | Balboa Blvd north, one road | 6–9 min |
| Valley Glen / Oxnard St (91411) | Oxnard to Victory, west to Balboa | 12–16 min |
Van Nuys Airport is a tower-controlled Class D field sitting beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B, with parallel runways — 16R/34L is 8,001 feet long. That matters more than it sounds: from your very first hour you are talking on a tower frequency and fitting into genuinely busy airspace rather than practicing on an empty strip. There is more on the field and its airspace on our page about Van Nuys Airport and its Class D airspace.
How Your Discovery Flight Works
Budget about two hours at the field for a 60-minute flight. The hour in the air is the lesson; the rest is what makes it one. The ground-level version of the same sequence is written up under what a discovery flight actually is.
-
Drive West, Not Around
Sherman Way, Saticoy or Victory west to Balboa Blvd, then north to 7900 Balboa. Put the street address in your map app rather than "Van Nuys Airport", because the field has gates along a mile of frontage and the one nearest your house may not be ours. Parking is free and on site; aim to arrive fifteen minutes early.
-
Photo ID And A Table Briefing
About five minutes with your instructor: what the controls do, what the instruments say and where you are going. Tell them your cross streets and they can plan the climb-out so your block turns up in the first minute.
-
Walk Around The Airplane Together
The preflight inspection every pilot does before every flight: fuel sampled, oil checked, control surfaces moved by hand, tires and lights looked at. You do it with the instructor, not from a waiting room.
-
Take Off From The Field You Hear From Home
You sit in the left seat. Your instructor taxis out with you, talks to the tower and flies the takeoff with your hands following on the yoke, so you feel what the airplane does on the runway you have listened to for years.
-
Fly It Yourself
Once the airplane is established in the climb it is yours: turns, climbs, descents, holding an altitude, the feel of the trim. East toward Universal or west toward Warner Center, the instructor keeps the radios and a hand near the controls.
-
Land, Debrief, Log It
The instructor lands, you taxi back and talk through what you flew. The hour is signed into a logbook with your name on it and counts toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum for a private pilot certificate; enroll within 24 hours and 100% of the flight is credited toward training.
What You'll See From Van Nuys' Side Of The Route
Three of the route's landmarks are close to home for anyone in Van Nuys: Van Nuys Airport itself, which you finally see whole, Universal Studios a few minutes east, and the Warner Center towers at the west end of the Valley. The longer flights add the Hollywood Sign, Downtown and the coast; the whole sixty-minute loop is mapped landmark by landmark on our airplane rides page.
Living under the departure path means you already know the shape of it. Flying it is different, because for the first time you are the one deciding where the airplane points.
Off the runway, the Valley floor opens out immediately and the grid resolves: Sherman Way, Victory, Vanowen, Saticoy, and Van Nuys Blvd running north to south through the middle of it. Almost every Van Nuys resident spends the first ninety seconds finding their own street, and almost all of them succeed, because the airport is the reference point and you know exactly where you live relative to it.
Turn south and the Sepulveda Basin arrives within two minutes — the dam at the east end, Lake Balboa as a clear ring of water, the golf courses and the concrete channel of the Los Angeles River running through it. Beyond that the ground rises into the Santa Monica Mountains, with Mulholland Drive tracing the crest.
From there the flight goes one of two ways. Eastbound takes you along the ridge toward Cahuenga Pass, where the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and the domes of Griffith Observatory come up on the left, with the downtown Los Angeles skyline standing on the plain behind them. Westbound crosses the mountains near Malibu Canyon and puts you over the Malibu coastline and Santa Monica Bay, which on a clear winter afternoon runs from Point Dume all the way round to Palos Verdes. Ninety and 120-minute flights have time for both halves; sixty minutes does one properly. The full set of routes is laid out on our page covering discovery flights in Los Angeles.
The Airplane, And Who Fits In It
The standard discovery flight is flown in a Piper Warrior PA-28-161, a four-seat, low-wing trainer with a good forward view and controls that are honest enough to learn on. The luxury option, with room for one passenger, uses a Cirrus SR22 — side-yoke, a large glass panel, and a whole-airframe parachute system.
Weight limits are set by the aircraft, not by us: 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Warrior; 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined in the Cirrus. There is no minimum age to fly a discovery flight, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to sign. You do not need an FAA medical certificate, because your instructor is the pilot in command. Bring a photo ID and sunglasses; everything else is here.

Our booking products carry no tax and no booking fee, so $229 is the total — the number on the button is the number that leaves your account. That is unusual enough in this business that it is worth stating plainly. If you want the reasoning behind each figure, we have set it out under what a discovery flight costs.
A free in-person consultation costs nothing and is a sensible first step if you are weighing a first flight against a full certificate. We are open 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week.
When The Weather Says No
Van Nuys has two seasonal patterns worth knowing before you pick a date. From roughly May into June the marine layer pushes over the Santa Monica Mountains overnight and can sit on the Valley until late morning, which is why early slots in that window get moved more often than any others. In high summer the heat raises density altitude, so the airplane climbs less willingly in the middle of the afternoon and the air over the ridges gets bumpy; mornings and evenings are smoother and cooler.
If the weather says no, you do not pay, and we reschedule you for nothing. Free rescheduling also applies up to 24 hours before your flight for any reason at all. The detail lives on our weather and cancellation policy page.
The tile shows the current Van Nuys observation, which for you is also the weather over your own roof. If it has not loaded, call or text (818) 330-1318 and whoever answers will read you what the field is reporting.
Give It As A Gift From Van Nuys
A flight that leaves from a few blocks away is an easy present to give: nobody has to take a day off or plan a trip across the 405, and the person you give it to can pick a weekday evening slot and still be home for dinner. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate arrives by email within minutes in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049. $229 covers the 60-minute flight, $299 the Downtown flight for two and $399 the 90-minute Malibu Coast flight for two. There are no blackout dates, the card can be passed on to someone else, and it never expires.
If the person is already talking about a pilot certificate, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons and never expires either. Every amount and what it buys is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?
Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, on the Balboa side of the field. Give your map app the street address rather than "Van Nuys Airport": the public gates are spread over a mile of frontage, so the gate a Van Nuys resident drives past most often may be the wrong one; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.
How Long Is The Drive From Van Nuys At Rush Hour?
Rush hour barely touches it. From the Civic Center, Sherman Way or Saticoy St takes 8 to 12 minutes, and anywhere in Van Nuys or Valley Glen is between 5 and 16. No freeway is involved, so a 5 PM weekday slot costs you a few extra signals rather than a 405 backup.
Can Two People Fly Together?
Yes. The Downtown and Malibu Coast flights for two start at $299 for 60 minutes, and in the Cirrus SR22 a passenger adds $100 to the $499 hour. One person flies from the left seat and the other rides in the back on the intercom. Seats are not swapped in the air, so if you both want time at the controls, book a flight each.
Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?
There is no minimum age as long as the person flying can see over the panel and wear a headset; for anyone under 18, a parent or guardian signs. The aircraft set the weight limits: up to 180 lb a person and 360 lb in total in the Piper Warrior, 200 lb and 400 lb in the Cirrus SR22. The $189 simulator session has no weight limit.
How Far Is 7900 Balboa Blvd From Central Van Nuys?
About three miles. From the Civic Center on Van Nuys Blvd, take Sherman Way or Saticoy St west: eight to twelve minutes.
Does The Hour Count Toward A Pilot Certificate?
Yes. It goes in your own logbook as dual instruction received and counts toward the 40 hours Part 61 sets as the private pilot minimum. Enroll within 24 hours and the full price of the flight is credited toward your training.
What Will I See In The First Five Minutes?
The Valley grid around the airport, then the Sepulveda Basin with Lake Balboa and the Sepulveda Dam, and then the Santa Monica Mountains ridge with Mulholland Drive along the top of it.
