Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

An intro flight near Sherman Oaks is closer than most people on Ventura Blvd assume. Van Nuys Airport is seven miles north-west of Ventura and Sepulveda, 15 to 18 minutes up the 405 at ten in the morning, and You Fly LA flies from its west side at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. For $229 you fly a Piper Warrior for 60 minutes with a certificated instructor beside you, and your own neighborhood is one of the first things you see: within about three minutes of takeoff the Sepulveda Basin passes beneath you and the Ventura Blvd corridor lines up off the wing.

Of all the things to do in Sherman Oaks on a free weekday evening, it is the one that ends with your name in a pilot's logbook and you back on the boulevard in time for dinner.

Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Sherman Oaks is $229 for 60 minutes at Van Nuys Airport, seven miles away: 15 to 18 minutes on the 405 at 10 AM or 8 PM, 28 to 38 at 5 PM on a weekday. You fly the airplane with an instructor on the controls beside you, and 90 minutes ($299) reaches the coast.

A Discovery Flight Seven Miles From The Galleria

Sherman Oaks is one of the few places in Los Angeles where the flying is closer than the parking at the mall. From Ventura Blvd and Sepulveda the airport is about seven miles north-west — fifteen to twenty minutes when the roads behave.

You have three ways to do it and the right one depends entirely on the hour. The 405 north to Roscoe Blvd, then west to Balboa is the shortest on paper. The 101 westbound to the Balboa Blvd exit, then north on Balboa for just under four miles is the smoothest at the weekend. And Van Nuys Blvd or Woodman Ave north to Victory Blvd, then west is the surface option that ignores both freeways, which matters more here than almost anywhere.

The 101, The 405, And Why You Should Book At Ten

Sherman Oaks has the misfortune of sitting on top of the 101/405 interchange, and any honest local page has to say so. Between roughly 7 and 9:30 in the morning and 4 and 7 in the evening, both freeways through Sherman Oaks are slower than the surface streets beside them, and a seven-mile trip can take thirty-five minutes.

The practical advice is simple: for a first flight, book a mid-morning or a mid-afternoon slot. Ten in the morning is the sweet spot — the marine layer has usually lifted, the interchange has cleared, the air has not yet gone bumpy with the afternoon heat, and the drive is fifteen minutes. Weekend mornings are almost as good.

Sherman Oaks To 7900 Balboa Blvd By Time Of Day
Route 10 AM Or 8 PM 5 PM Weekday
405 north to Roscoe Blvd, west to Balboa 15–18 min 28–38 min
101 west to Balboa Blvd, north 16–20 min 30–40 min
Van Nuys Blvd north, Victory Blvd west 20–24 min 26–32 min

What You'll See From Sherman Oaks' Side Of The Route

The route landmarks nearest to Sherman Oaks are Van Nuys Airport itself, just across the Basin from you, Universal Studios east along the 101, and the Warner Center towers at the far west end of Ventura Blvd. Because you sit between them, a Sherman Oaks flight can go either way; the full loop, landmark by landmark, is mapped on our airplane rides page.

Because Sherman Oaks lies directly south-east of the airport, it arrives early. Within about three minutes of leaving the ground, the Sepulveda Basin passes beneath — dam, lake, golf courses, the concrete line of the Los Angeles River — and then the whole Ventura Blvd corridor unrolls east to west with your own streets stacked north of it.

The 101/405 interchange is the landmark nobody expects to enjoy and everybody does: from 2,000 feet the ramps resolve into a single readable shape, and the reason it behaves the way it does at 5:30 becomes obvious in a way no amount of sitting in it ever explains. Just west of it, the Sherman Oaks Galleria and the office towers at Sepulveda mark the one stretch of the boulevard with any height to it.

Then the ground rises. The Santa Monica Mountains run along the south edge of your neighborhood with Mulholland Drive on the crest, and Fryman Canyon and Coldwater Canyon Park drop back down toward you. Cross the ridge and the Westside opens up: Century City's towers, the Getty Center on its ridge above the Sepulveda Pass, and Santa Monica Bay filling the horizon. Turn the other way instead, and the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory come up in under ten minutes. There is a longer description of the routes on the Los Angeles discovery flight overview.

Sixty, Ninety Or A Hundred And Twenty Minutes

Sixty minutes at $229 is a complete first lesson and reaches one side of the map properly — the mountains and either the Hollywood end or the coast end, not both. Ninety minutes at $299 is the length most people wish they had booked, because it gets you to the ocean and back with time to actually practice turns on the way. A hundred and twenty minutes is $399 and makes sense if you are treating this as the first hour of training rather than an experiment.

If two of you want to go, the named two-person flights are $299, $399 and $499 for 60, 90 and 120 minutes on either the Downtown Los Angeles or the Malibu Coast route, and the Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight is $499, $649 and $799 for one flyer, or $599, $849 and $1,049 with a passenger. From Sherman Oaks either two-person route works, since you sit almost exactly between the two.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

Leave two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight, because the briefing, the walk-round and the debrief are all part of the lesson. The same sequence in more detail is on our page explaining the discovery flight, start to finish.

  1. Pick The Road By The Clock

At 10 AM the 405 north to Roscoe is 15 to 18 minutes; at 5 PM the surface run up Van Nuys Blvd to Victory is steadier at 26 to 32. Either way you finish on Balboa Blvd: give the map app 7900 Balboa, park free on site and arrive fifteen minutes early with a photo ID.

  2. Five Minutes At The Table

Your instructor explains the controls, the handful of instruments that matter and today's plan. If you want to look for your street, say so here; Sherman Oaks is south-east of the runway, so it is an easy request.

  3. The Walk-Round

Fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires, the whole airframe: the same inspection every pilot does before every flight, done by you with the instructor beside you.

  4. Wheels Up, Then It Is Yours

The instructor handles the tower and the takeoff with your hands on the yoke. By the time the Sepulveda Basin is under you the airplane is established in the climb and the controls are yours.

  5. Find Ventura Blvd From 2,000 Feet

Turns, level flight, a climb and a descent, flown by you, with the Galleria, the 101/405 interchange and the Santa Monica Mountains laid out below. Sixty minutes goes properly to one side of the map; ninety reaches the coast as well.

  6. Debrief And A Signed Logbook

The instructor lands, you talk through the flight, and the hour is signed into your logbook as dual instruction received. It counts toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum, and 100% of it is credited if you enroll in training within 24 hours.

Prices And The Total You Actually Pay

What A Sherman Oaks Booking Costs
Flight 60 90 120
Discovery Flight, one person $229 $299 $399
For Two — Malibu Coast $299 $399 $499
For Two — Downtown Los Angeles $299 $399 $499
Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight $499 $649 $799
Luxury Cirrus SR22 Discovery Flight, With A Passenger $599 $849 $1,049

Every one of those is the true total. There is no tax and no booking fee on our booking products, so the $229 you see is the $229 you pay. We break the arithmetic down on the price page, and if you would rather talk it through in person, a free consultation at the airport costs nothing.

If The Marine Layer Wins

Sherman Oaks residents know the May and June pattern better than most, because the cloud comes over the ridge above Mulholland and sits on the south side of the Valley first. Mornings in that window are the likeliest to move. Later in the summer the issue flips: heat lifts density altitude, the airplane climbs less eagerly, and the air over the Santa Monica Mountains turns rough by early afternoon.

Weather cancellations cost you nothing, and you can reschedule free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead — see our rescheduling policy. There is also a $189 full-motion simulator hour, which is a genuinely good use of a fogged-in morning.

The tile above is the live report from the airport seven miles north-west of you. If it does not appear, text (818) 330-1318 and we will tell you whether the layer has lifted yet.

Give It As A Gift From Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks sits almost exactly between the two routes we fly for two people, which makes the $299 card the obvious present for a couple: the Downtown flight turns east toward the skyline, the Malibu Coast flight turns west over the mountains to the ocean, and the person you give it to picks. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate comes by email within minutes in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049, has no blackout dates and never expires.

$229 covers one person for an hour; $399 buys the 90-minute Malibu Coast flight for two, and $499 an hour in the Cirrus SR22 ($599 with a passenger). For someone ready to go further, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons. See every option on the flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

Free parking is on site at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. Whichever route you take from Sherman Oaks, finish on Balboa Blvd and navigate to the street address, not "Van Nuys Airport": the field has several gates over a mile of frontage; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.

How Long Is The Drive From Sherman Oaks At Rush Hour?

At 5 PM on a weekday the 405 to Roscoe takes 28 to 38 minutes and the 101 to Balboa 30 to 40. Van Nuys Blvd north to Victory, then west, is the steadiest at 26 to 32 minutes because it avoids the interchange entirely.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes, on the Downtown or Malibu Coast flight for two ($299 for 60 minutes), or in the Cirrus SR22 with a passenger ($599 for 60 minutes). One person flies from the left seat and the other rides in the back on the intercom; if you both want to fly, book a flight each, because seats are not swapped in the air.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

Age is not the constraint people expect: nobody is too young as long as they can see over the panel and wear a headset, and a parent or guardian signs for anyone under 18. Weight is set by the airplane, 180 lb each and 360 lb together in the Piper Warrior, 200 lb and 400 lb in the Cirrus SR22.

When Should I Book To Avoid The 101 And The 405?

Around 10 AM. By then the marine layer has usually burned off, the 101/405 interchange has emptied out, the afternoon heat has not yet made the air bumpy, and the 405 takes about fifteen minutes.

Should I Book 60 Or 90 Minutes?

Ninety minutes at $299 if you can, because that reaches the ocean and still leaves time to practice turns on the way back. Sixty minutes at $229 covers one side of the map properly.

What Will I Recognize From The Air?

The Sepulveda Basin first, then Ventura Blvd, with your own neighborhood in the grid just north of it. The one nobody expects to enjoy is the 101/405 interchange: at 2,000 feet its ramps turn into one shape you can read.
