    Book A Discovery Flight · $229

Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

An introductory flight lesson near Santa Clarita means one trip over the Newhall Pass to Van Nuys Airport: about 26 miles from Valencia, 27 to 35 minutes down the 5 and the 405 when the pass is clear. You Fly LA flies from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, and for $229 you spend 60 minutes in the left seat of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor beside you. Ask for the northbound departure and, once the Santa Susana Mountains are behind you, the first thing you fly over is the valley you just drove out of.

Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Santa Clarita is $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 or $399 for 120, at Van Nuys Airport 27 to 35 minutes away via the 5 and 405 (or the 5 and 118 from Newhall). You fly the airplane, the instructor takes off and lands, and a 10 AM or 1 PM weekday slot keeps you clear of the pass at both ends.

Over The Newhall Pass And Down The 405

Two freeway routes work and they diverge at Sylmar. The usual one is the 5 south through the Newhall Pass, then the 405 south to Roscoe Blvd, west on Roscoe about a mile and a half to Balboa, and south to number 7900. Twenty-five miles, twenty-five to thirty-five minutes when the pass is clear.

The alternative is the 5 south to the 118 west, then south on Balboa Blvd for about five miles. It is a similar distance, it crosses the top of the Valley rather than cutting down its spine, and it is the better choice when the 405 south of the 5 interchange is heavy — which is most weekday mornings. From the Newhall and Canyon Country side, coming down the 14 to the 5 adds a few minutes before either option begins.

The one thing to plan around is the Newhall Pass itself. Southbound between roughly 6:30 and 9:00 in the morning is the commute, and northbound between 3:00 and 7:00 in the afternoon is the return. A 10 am or a 1 pm booking sidesteps both, and a Saturday morning is a clean thirty minutes each way.

Santa Clarita To 7900 Balboa Blvd
From Route Distance Typical Drive
Valencia (McBean Pkwy) 5 south, 405 south, Roscoe Blvd west ~26 mi 27–35 min
Newhall / Old Town 5 south, 118 west, Balboa Blvd south ~24 mi 26–34 min
Canyon Country 14 south to 5 south, then 405 south ~30 mi 32–42 min
Stevenson Ranch 5 south, 405 south, Roscoe Blvd west ~27 mi 28–36 min

What You'll See From Santa Clarita's Side Of The Route

Of the route's landmarks, the two on your side of the map are Van Nuys Airport, the field you drive over the pass to reach, and the Warner Center towers at the west end of the Valley. Everything else a Santa Clarita flight sees is your own country north of the ridge. The standard loop, landmark by landmark, is on our airplane rides page.

Most first flights out of Van Nuys go south or east. A Santa Clarita booking usually starts by going the other way, because your valley is the one just over the hill and it looks completely different from three thousand feet.

The Santa Susana Mountains come first — the ridge that separates the two valleys, with the 5 climbing over the Newhall Pass at the east end of it and the interchange with the 14 stacked in the gap. From above, the pass is no longer a traffic problem but what it actually is: the one low place in a long wall of hills.

Beyond it the Santa Clarita Valley opens out, far greener and far emptier than the San Fernando Valley, with the Santa Clara River running west through the middle of it as a broad sandy wash rather than a concrete channel. Six Flags Magic Mountain is unmistakable — a knot of steel structures on its own hill beside the 5 — and the Valencia grid, the paseos and the golf courses read as a much more deliberate piece of planning than anything south of the pass. Further north the hills fold up toward Castaic, and to the east the terrain turns into the high desert country above Agua Dulce.

Turn back south and the whole San Fernando Valley is laid out in front of you, with the Santa Monica Mountains beyond it and, on a clear day, the ocean behind those. That contrast — two valleys, one ridge, ten minutes apart — is the thing Santa Clarita students talk about in the debrief.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

A discovery flight is a flying lesson, not a ride, and given the drive from Santa Clarita it is worth knowing the hour is not a novelty purchase: it is hour one. Allow two hours at the airport for 60 minutes and two and a half for 90; our explainer on discovery flights writes the sequence out in full.

  1. Over The Pass, Down To Balboa

From Valencia, the 5 south, the 405 south and Roscoe Blvd west to Balboa: 27 to 35 minutes. From Newhall, the 5 to the 118 west and south on Balboa: 26 to 34. Navigate to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, park free on site and arrive fifteen minutes early.

  2. The Briefing

Five minutes or so at a table. You learn what the yoke, pedals and throttle do and agree the plan; say you want the northbound departure if you want to see home.

  3. The Preflight

You and your instructor inspect the airplane together: fuel, oil, tires and control surfaces, the same walk-round every pilot does before every flight.

  4. Takeoff From Van Nuys

From the left seat you follow the instructor through the takeoff, hands light on the yoke, while they talk to the tower. Once the airplane is climbing steadily it is yours.

  5. North Over The Santa Susanas

You fly it over the ridge between the two valleys, with the Newhall Pass at its east end, and out over the Santa Clara River, Six Flags Magic Mountain beside the 5 and the Valencia grid. The instructor stays on the controls with you the whole time.

  6. Back South, Land And Log It

Turning south, the whole San Fernando Valley is laid out ahead. The instructor lands, you debrief, and the hour goes into your logbook as dual instruction received toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum; enroll within 24 hours and all of it is credited.

The Airplane And The Numbers

You will fly a Piper Warrior PA-28-161. Four seats, low wing, straightforward controls, which is what makes it a trainer. Weight limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined. The Cirrus SR22 option, which takes one passenger, allows 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined and brings a side-yoke, a large glass panel and a whole-airframe parachute.

Requirements are minimal: photo ID, a parent or guardian signature for anyone under 18, and no FAA medical certificate, because your instructor is the pilot in command. No experience at all is assumed.

Booking Around The 5

The practical scheduling advice for Santa Clarita is different from anywhere else we serve, because your variable is a mountain pass rather than a boulevard. Book late morning or early afternoon on a weekday, or any time at the weekend. Avoid a 5 pm slot on a Friday unless you are content to spend an hour getting home. If you want the smoothest air as well as the clearest road, a 10 am flight is usually both.

Weather And Free Rescheduling

Santa Clarita is over the ridge from the coastal influence, so the May and June marine layer that closes in on the San Fernando Valley often leaves your valley in sunshine. That makes it tempting to judge the day by your own sky, and it is the wrong sky — the airport is the one that matters. Call before you drive over the pass.

Summer heat is the other factor: high density altitude means slower climbs and rougher air over the hills in the afternoon. You pay nothing for a weather cancellation, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead. Details on how rescheduling works.

That tile is the live report from Van Nuys, on the far side of the ridge from you. If it will not load, call or text (818) 330-1318 before you set off over the pass.

Give It As A Gift From Santa Clarita

For someone in Santa Clarita, the best part of a gift certificate is that it lets them pick the day the pass is clear. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate is emailed within minutes, in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049, with no blackout dates, and it never expires, so the flight can wait for a 10 AM weekday or a quiet Saturday morning. $229 is one person for 60 minutes.

For a parent and a teenager from Valencia or Stevenson Ranch, $299 buys a flight for two with one at the controls and one on the intercom. If the person already talks about becoming a pilot, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons. Every option is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. On the 405 route you take Roscoe Blvd west and turn south on Balboa; on the 118 route you come south on Balboa for about five miles. Enter the street address rather than "Van Nuys Airport", which can route you to the wrong gate; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.

How Long Is The Drive From Santa Clarita At Rush Hour?

The Newhall Pass is the variable: southbound between about 6:30 and 9 AM is the commute and northbound between 3 and 7 PM is the return. Off-peak it is 27 to 35 minutes from Valencia; a 5 PM Friday slot can mean an hour getting home.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes. A parent and teenager, or two friends, can book a flight for two: $299 for 60 minutes on the Downtown or Malibu Coast route, or $599 in the Cirrus SR22 with a passenger. One flies from the left seat and the other rides in the back on the intercom; if both of you want to fly, book a flight each.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

The only age rule is a parent or guardian's signature for anyone under 18; beyond that, the person flying needs to see over the panel and wear a headset. The Piper Warrior carries up to 180 lb a person and 360 lb in total and the Cirrus SR22 200 lb and 400 lb, which is worth checking before a thirty-minute drive.

Which Freeway Route Is Better?

From Valencia and Stevenson Ranch, the 5 and 405 to Roscoe. On most weekday mornings the 405 below its interchange with the 5 is heavy, and then you are better off taking the 5 to the 118 west and coming south on Balboa.

Will The Flight Go Over Santa Clarita?

Usually, yes. A Santa Clarita booking tends to turn north over the Santa Susana Mountains, so you see the Newhall Pass, the Santa Clara River, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Valencia before turning back over the San Fernando Valley.

My Sky Is Clear. Is The Airport Clear?

Not necessarily. Santa Clarita is often in sunshine while the May and June marine layer sits over the San Fernando Valley, so judge the day by the airport rather than your own sky, and call before you drive over the pass.
