Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

An intro flying lesson near Northridge is six miles away and needs no freeway. Van Nuys Airport sits south-east of you, 13 to 18 minutes from Nordhoff and Reseda along Nordhoff and Balboa, and You Fly LA flies from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. For $229 you spend 60 minutes in the left seat of a Piper Warrior, with a certificated instructor beside you and the controls in your hands for most of the hour. Home comes up almost straight away: the CSUN campus and the Fashion Center first, then the Santa Susana Mountains closing off the top of the Valley.

Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Northridge costs $229 for 60 minutes ($299 for 90, $399 for 120) at Van Nuys Airport, 11 to 20 minutes away on surface streets at any time of day. Six Miles South-East, No Freeway Needed

From Nordhoff St and Reseda Blvd, the simplest route is Nordhoff east to Balboa Blvd and then south — about six miles, thirteen to eighteen minutes. Roscoe Blvd east does the same job one mile south, and from the Porter Ranch side the 118 east to the Balboa Blvd exit, then south is quicker still.

Northridge is one of the easy ones. There is no freeway bottleneck between you and the airport, nothing that collapses at half past five, and the whole trip is on streets you already use. That changes the kind of booking that makes sense: a 6 pm weekday slot is entirely reasonable from here, and if a cancellation opens up at short notice you can actually take it.

Northridge To 7900 Balboa Blvd
From Route Distance Typical Drive
Reseda Blvd & Nordhoff St Nordhoff east, Balboa south ~6 mi 13–18 min
CSUN (Zelzah & Nordhoff) Nordhoff east, Balboa south ~5 mi 11–16 min
Northridge Fashion Center Tampa to Roscoe, east to Balboa ~7 mi 15–20 min
North of the 118 (Porter Ranch side) 118 east, Balboa Blvd exit, south ~8 mi 14–19 min

What You'll See From Northridge's Side Of The Route

Two of the route's landmarks sit on the Northridge end of the map: Van Nuys Airport, six miles south-east, and the Warner Center towers to the south-west. The rest of a Northridge flight is the north Valley itself, then either the Hollywood Sign or the coast; the complete loop is mapped landmark by landmark on our airplane rides page.

The airport is close enough that Northridge is under the wing almost as soon as the airplane is cleaned up after takeoff, and the first thing most people find is the CSUN campus, which from the air is an obvious rectangle of low buildings, playing fields and parking lots in the middle of a residential grid. The Northridge Fashion Center is the other easy fix, and between the two you can trace Nordhoff and Reseda well enough to find your own street.

Look north and the ground changes character fast. The Santa Susana Mountains close off the top of the Valley, with Porter Ranch climbing the lower slopes and the 118 running east to west along the foot of them. West of that the Chatsworth Reservoir basin and the Simi Hills sit in open country, and the Santa Susana Pass is the notch the railway and the old road use to get through to Simi Valley — a piece of geography that explains the whole shape of the west Valley once you have seen it from above.

Turn south instead and the flight runs down the Valley toward the Sepulveda Basin and the Santa Monica Mountains, with the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory ten or so minutes to the south-east and the Malibu coast about the same distance to the south-west. Sixty minutes from Northridge covers the north end properly and reaches one of those two; ninety does both.

That north-then-south shape is particular to bookings from this end of the Valley. Someone flying from Pasadena or Glendale spends their hour east of the airport and may never see the Santa Susanas at all; from Northridge the mountains are the opening act and the city is the second half. If you want to compare what each route covers before you choose a length, the options are laid out on the discovery flight route guide.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

The hour in the air sits inside a visit of about two hours. The instructor flies the takeoff and the landing; everything in between is yours, which is the difference between a lesson and a ride. Our discovery flight walkthrough has the full sequence.

  1. Nordhoff East, Balboa South

About six miles and 13 to 18 minutes from Reseda Blvd, 11 to 16 from CSUN, 15 to 20 from the Fashion Center via Tampa and Roscoe. From the Porter Ranch side, the 118 east to Balboa. Park free on site at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, and arrive fifteen minutes early.

  2. Briefing

Around five minutes at a table: the controls, the instruments that matter and the plan, which from Northridge often means north first and then south.

  3. The Preflight

You walk around the actual airplane with your instructor checking fuel, oil, tires and control surfaces, the inspection every pilot does before every flight.

  4. Takeoff

The instructor talks to the tower and flies the takeoff with your hands following through, then hands you the airplane once the climb is steady.

  5. Find CSUN, Then Turn South

You hold the heading and altitude and fly the turns: the CSUN campus and the Fashion Center to trace Nordhoff and Reseda, the Santa Susanas and Porter Ranch to the north, then down the Valley toward the Sepulveda Basin and the mountains.

  6. Debrief And Logbook

The instructor lands, you go over the flight, and the time is logged as dual instruction received toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum. What the rest of that path looks like from the north-west Valley is on flight school near Northridge.

The Fleet And The Weight Limits

The standard discovery flight uses a Piper Warrior PA-28-161: four seats, low wing, the sort of airplane that teaches you something honest about flying. Limits are 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined.

The premium option is the Cirrus SR22, which takes one passenger, with a side-yoke, a large glass panel and a whole-airframe parachute system; limits there are 200 lb per person and 400 lb combined. There is also a $189 hour in the full-motion simulator, which has no weight limit and is a sensible first step if flying makes you anxious.

No FAA medical certificate is needed, because the instructor is pilot in command. No experience is assumed. No minimum age, with a parent or guardian signature required under 18. Bring photo ID.

Marine Layer Mornings And Summer Afternoons

The north-west Valley is the last part of the basin the marine layer reaches and the first part it leaves, so Northridge mornings in May and June are often clear while the south side of the Valley is not. The airport sits between the two, and the only reliable indicator is the airport itself.

The larger seasonal factor here is heat. The north Valley runs hot from July through September, and high density altitude means a lazier climb and rougher air over the Santa Susanas in the afternoon. An early-morning or evening slot flies noticeably better. You pay nothing if we cancel for weather, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead — see free rescheduling and weather cancellations.

That tile is the live Van Nuys observation, updated through the day, so it answers the question a Northridge sky cannot. If it has not loaded, text (818) 330-1318 and we will tell you what the field is doing.

Give It As A Gift From Northridge

A flight six miles from home makes an easy present for a student, a parent or anyone who has watched the traffic climb out of Van Nuys over the north Valley. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate arrives by email within minutes in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049, has no blackout dates and never expires, and because the drive is short the person you give it to can take a weekday evening or a short-notice opening. $229 covers the 60-minute flight.

If flying makes them anxious, the $189 amount matches an hour in the full-motion simulator, which has no weight limit and never gets canceled for weather. $299 buys a flight for two. For someone set on a certificate, Flight Training Credit comes in $500, $1,000 and $2,500. All of it is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. From Northridge you come south on Balboa and the address is on the street itself. Use the street address in your map app rather than "Van Nuys Airport", which can route you to a gate on the far side of the field.

How Long Is The Drive From Northridge At Rush Hour?

Barely different from off-peak: 11 to 20 minutes depending on your starting point, since no freeway sits between you and the airport. From here, a 6 PM weekday booking is perfectly realistic.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes. The flights for two, Downtown or Malibu Coast, cost $299 for 60 minutes, and the Cirrus SR22 with a passenger $599. One of you sits in the left seat and flies; the other rides in the back and hears everything on the intercom. If you both want to fly, book a flight each.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

There is no minimum age; what matters is that the person flying can see over the panel and wear a headset, and a parent or guardian signs for anyone under 18. The Piper Warrior is limited to 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined and the Cirrus SR22 to 200 lb and 400 lb; the $189 simulator has no weight limit at all.

Will I See CSUN From The Air?

Yes, and it is usually the first thing people spot: a big rectangle of low buildings, sports fields and parking lots set into the residential grid, with the Fashion Center a little to the south-west.

Do I Actually Get To Fly?

Yes. The instructor flies the takeoff and the landing; the climb out, the turns, holding a heading and an altitude and the descent are yours, with the instructor on the controls and the radio throughout.

What Is The Best Time Of Day In Summer?

Morning or early evening. From July through September the middle of the afternoon is the hottest part of the day at the airport, and hot air means a slower climb and a bumpier ride near the hills; a 10 AM or a 6 PM slot avoids both.
