Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

If you live in El Monte you already have a general aviation airport five minutes away. San Gabriel Valley Airport, still widely called El Monte Airport and still KEMT on a chart, has flight training on it, and for a lot of people that proximity is the right answer. You Fly LA is at Van Nuys Airport, 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, about 34 miles west, which is 40 to 75 minutes across the top of the basin.

So this page has to earn the drive rather than assume it. Below is an honest comparison of the two training environments and a plain list of the cases where you should stay at El Monte. The general criteria for judging any school are on our page about choosing a flight school in Los Angeles.

Getting Here From El Monte

There is no single obvious freeway, which is why this drive feels longer than the mileage suggests. Two routes work and the traffic on the day decides between them.

  • The northern route. The 10 west or the 605 north to the 210 west, then the 134 west through Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank, joining the 101 north at Universal City and exiting at Balboa Boulevard. Longer on the map, usually better in the afternoon.
  • The central route. The 10 west to the 110 north, then the 101 north through the Cahuenga Pass and along the south Valley to Balboa Boulevard. Shorter, and slower whenever downtown is busy.

Either way you finish the same: exit at Balboa Boulevard or take the 405 north and exit Roscoe, then west on Roscoe and south on Balboa.

Driving From The San Gabriel Valley To Van Nuys Airport
Starting Point Route Approximate Distance Drive Time Range
El Monte City Hall, 91731 10 W to 110 N to 101 N, exit Balboa About 34 miles 40 to 75 minutes
South El Monte, 91733 60 W to 10 W to 110 N to 101 N About 36 miles 45 to 80 minutes
Rosemead and Temple City side, 91770 10 W or 210 W to 134 W to 101 N About 32 miles 40 to 70 minutes
Baldwin Park and West Covina side, 91706 10 W to 110 N to 101 N, exit Balboa About 40 miles 48 to 85 minutes
Arcadia and Monrovia side, 91007 210 W to 134 W to 101 N, exit Balboa About 32 miles 40 to 70 minutes

The Honest Version Of That Drive

This is a cross-basin commute, not a straight run, and it crosses three separate congestion zones: the 10 and the 110 through downtown, the 134 through Glendale and Burbank, and the 101 through the Cahuenga Pass. You are heading west in the morning and east in the afternoon, which is with the flow rather than against it, so the direction does not help you the way it helps a South Bay or west-side student.

The practical consequence is that mid-morning and weekend slots are worth disproportionately more to a San Gabriel Valley student. Ten in the morning on a weekday is a genuine 45 minutes. Four in the afternoon is 75 and will feel like more. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM seven days, so an early Saturday block is usually the easiest booking of the week.

KEMT And KVNY, Compared Plainly

Two Training Environments
Factor El Monte, KEMT Van Nuys, KVNY
Distance from El Monte City Hall Minutes About 34 miles
Runways A single runway, shorter than Van Nuys's main runway Two parallels, 16R/34L at 8,001 ft and 16L/34R at 4,000 ft
Airspace Towered Class D in the San Gabriel Valley Towered Class D directly under the Burbank Class C shelf
Traffic volume A quieter field, which is easier for a first-timer One of the world's busiest general aviation airports
Terrain to the north The San Gabriel Mountains close by, which shapes departures The Santa Susanas and the Santa Monicas, with more room to maneuver
Multi-engine training Ask locally what is available Piper Seminole on the ramp, seven-day rating at $5,100
Full-motion simulator Ask locally what is available Redbird MCX, an FAA-approved advanced aviation training device
Ratings on one field Ask locally how far the ladder goes Sport through CFI, CFII and MEI

Two things are worth saying plainly. A quieter field is genuinely easier for a nervous beginner, and there is nothing wrong with learning somewhere you get a landing clearance without waiting. But a busy Class D under a Class C shelf builds a radio operator faster than anything else, and that is the skill that decides whether a new private pilot is comfortable flying anywhere in the country or only at home. Our Los Angeles airspace guide explains what the Class B shelf just south of Van Nuys actually means in the cockpit.

When You Should Stay At El Monte

We would rather you trained well nearby than badly here. Stay local if:

  • You want a private certificate and nothing more. The syllabus in 14 CFR 61.109 is the same at every field. Fleet depth and a twin on the ramp matter far less to you than the ability to fly twice a week.
  • Your only free slots are weekday afternoons. The cross-basin drive is at its worst exactly then, and a 75-minute crawl will kill your cadence within two months.
  • You are nervous and want a quiet pattern. A less busy field is a kinder place to make your first twenty landings.
  • You can walk or cycle to the airport. That advantage is worth more than most things a bigger school can offer, because it makes flying three times a week possible.

When The Drive Is Worth It

  • A multi-engine rating. The Piper Seminole, N311EF, runs as a seven-day accelerated course at $5,100 with a Monday start and a checkride the same weekend. You drive over twice, not fifty times.
  • An instrument rating with real simulator time. $11,700 for 20 hours of aircraft and 20 hours of simulator. Under 14 CFR 61.65 part of the instrument dual requirement may be met in a qualifying device, which is where a full-motion simulator earns its place.
  • Commercial and instructor ratings. Commercial at $15,400 and the combined CFI, CFII and MEI program at $15,400, on the same ramp with the same aircraft.
  • Endorsements. Complex in the Piper Arrow at $999 under 14 CFR 61.31(e), high-performance in the Cirrus SR22 Turbo at $1,799 under 61.31(f), and spin training in the Diamond DA20-C1 for the endorsement required by 14 CFR 61.183(i).
  • A career program. The Airline Pilot Career Program is $84,000 over about nine months to 260 logged hours with every rating through MEI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is There A Flight School At El Monte Airport?

Yes. San Gabriel Valley Airport, KEMT, has flight training on the field. If proximity and a quieter pattern matter most to you, training locally is a sensible choice and we will tell you so.

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From El Monte?

About 34 miles from El Monte City Hall, either via the 10 and the 110 to the 101, or via the 210 and the 134 to the 101. Allow 45 minutes mid-morning and up to 75 minutes in the afternoon peak.

What Is The Difference Between Training At KEMT And KVNY?

El Monte is a quieter towered Class D field with a single runway, which is easier for a beginner. Van Nuys is a towered Class D field with two parallel runways directly beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B, which builds radio and airspace skills faster and supports ratings through flight instructor on one ramp.

When Should I Just Train At El Monte?

If you only want a private certificate, if your free time is weekday afternoons, if a quiet pattern suits how you learn, or if you can get to the airport without driving. Frequency beats facilities for most private pilot students.

When Is The Drive To Van Nuys Worth It?

For the seven-day multi-engine rating at $5,100, for an instrument rating with 20 hours of full-motion simulator time, for commercial and instructor ratings, for complex and high-performance endorsements, and for spin training toward the CFI endorsement required by 14 CFR 61.183(i).

Can I Start At El Monte And Finish At Van Nuys?

Yes. Bring your logbook and endorsements, fly one assessment lesson so an instructor can see where you are, and we will build the rest of the course from that point rather than starting again.

Which Route Is Faster, The 134 Or The 110?

The 210 and 134 route is usually better in the afternoon; the 10 and 110 route is shorter and usually better mid-morning. Neither is quick between four and seven on a weekday.

Is A Discovery Flight Credited Toward Training?

Yes. A 60-minute discovery flight is $229, you fly it from the left seat, and the full amount is credited toward your course if you enroll within 24 hours.

Come Across The Basin Once And Compare

The fair test is to fly an hour at each field and see which one suits you. A discovery flight here is $229 for 60 minutes, you fly it from the left seat, and it is logged as dual instruction.
