Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

Fullerton has its own general aviation airport with flight schools on it, and for a straightforward private pilot course that is almost certainly where you should train. You Fly LA is at Van Nuys Airport, 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, about 46 miles northwest, which is 55 to 100 minutes on the 57, the 5 and the 101. This page exists to answer one question honestly: what does a 46-mile drive actually buy a Fullerton pilot?

The answer is not better instruction. Instruction is a person, and good instructors work at small fields and large ones. What a bigger operation buys is availability, and availability is the thing that quietly decides how long your certificate takes. Our broader guide to choosing a flight school in Los Angeles sets out the full checklist; this page is about the part of it that matters most at a distance.

Getting Here From Fullerton

The usual route is the 57 north to the 5 north through the Santa Ana Narrows and downtown Los Angeles, then the 101 north over the Cahuenga Pass and along the south Valley, exiting at Balboa Boulevard. West on Roscoe if you carry on to the 405, south on Balboa, and we are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, on the left.

The alternative is the 91 west to the 605 north to the 210 west, then the 134 west and the 101 north. It is longer but it avoids downtown entirely, which is worth knowing on a weekday afternoon.

Driving From North Orange County To Van Nuys Airport
Starting Point Route Approximate Distance Drive Time Range

Fullerton Airport area, 92833 91 W to 605 N to 210 W to 134 W to 101 N About 48 miles 58 to 100 minutes
Brea and north Fullerton, 92821 57 N to 5 N to 101 N, exit Balboa About 46 miles 55 to 95 minutes
Buena Park and La Habra side, 90620 5 N to 101 N, exit Balboa About 43 miles 52 to 95 minutes
Placentia and Yorba Linda side, 92870 57 N to 5 N to 101 N, exit Balboa About 49 miles 58 to 105 minutes

The Honest Version Of That Drive

Forty-six miles through the middle of Los Angeles is not a weekly commitment we would recommend to anybody. The 5 through downtown is slow for most of the working day, and the 101 through the Cahuenga Pass adds its own twenty minutes between four and seven. You are traveling northwest in the morning and southeast in the afternoon, roughly with the flow rather than against it, which is the unfavorable direction.

What that means in practice: mid-morning weekday slots and weekend mornings are the only versions of this drive that stay reasonable. We are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day, so a 9 AM Saturday block is the booking most north Orange County students settle on.

It also means you should not plan to commute for a whole private pilot course. Use the field on your doorstep for that, and use us the way distance students actually use us, which is in blocks.

The Availability Problem Nobody Warns You About

Here is the thing that decides how long a certificate takes and that almost no flight school page will tell you. Your progress is limited by three resources: an instructor, an airplane and a slot. Lose any one of them and the lesson does not happen. Lose the same one repeatedly and the timeline stretches.

At a small operation, the airplane is usually the binding constraint. One trainer in for its 100-hour inspection, an oil leak, a magneto, an avionics shop with a two-week queue, and a school with two or three aircraft loses a meaningful share of its capacity. Students do not see this as cancellations; they see it as being offered a slot ten days out instead of three.

Fleet depth changes that arithmetic. Here is what is actually on the ramp:

The Training Fleet And What Each Aircraft Is For
Aircraft Tail Numbers Used For Package Rate
Cessna 162 Skycatcher N60225, N7030B, N6039M, N179LC, N5208V, N52049 Sport pilot, private pilot $179 per hour
Piper Warrior PA-28-161 N3034Q, N6312C Private, instrument $179 per hour
Diamond DA20-C1 N306EF, N308EF Private, commercial, spin training $229 per hour
Piper Arrow PA-28R N316EF Commercial, complex endorsement Part of the $15,400 commercial course
Piper Seminole PA-44-180 N311EF Multi-engine rating, MEI Part of the $5,100 multi-engine package
Cirrus SR22 Turbo N422SN High-performance, IFR, private pilot training $579 per hour
Redbird MCX full-motion simulator — Instrument, procedures, weather days $120 per hour

Identical Skycatchers are what matter for a primary student. They mean a maintenance squawk moves your lesson to a different tail number rather than to a different week. The full fleet is listed on the airplanes you will fly, and rates are on our rates page.

How To Use A School 46 Miles Away

Flight instructor briefing a student pilot in the cockpit before a training flight

Not weekly. In blocks, for the things your local field cannot give you.

  • The seven-day multi-engine rating. $5,100 in the Piper Seminole: 8 hours in the twin, 2 hours in the simulator, 10 hours of dual and 2 hours of ground. Classes start Mondays and the checkride is the same weekend. You drive up twice.
  • Complex and high-performance endorsements. The Piper Arrow at $999 under 14 CFR 61.31(e) and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo at $1,799 under 61.31(f). Each is a short block, not a term.
  • Spin training for the CFI endorsement. In the Diamond DA20-C1, which is certificated in the utility category for spins, toward the endorsement required by 14 CFR 61.183(i).
  • Instrument work in the simulator. The Redbird MCX is an FAA-approved advanced aviation training device, and under 14 CFR 61.65 part of the instrument dual requirement may be met in a qualifying device.
  • Multi-engine time after the rating. Multi-engine hours are the ones that are hardest to find and most valuable to a commercial pilot's logbook; call or text (818) 330-1318 to talk through checkouts and currency.

If your goal is the airline path, the Airline Pilot Career Program is $84,000 over about nine months to 260 logged hours with every rating through multi-engine instructor, and that is a relocation rather than a commute. Our page on housing and transport for out-of-town students covers what that involves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is There A Flight School At Fullerton Airport?

Yes. Fullerton Municipal Airport has flight training on the field. For a private pilot certificate, training at the airport nearest you is usually the better choice because frequency matters more than facilities.

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Fullerton?

About 46 miles via the 57, the 5 and the 101. Allow 55 to 60 minutes mid-morning or at weekends, and up to 100 minutes in the weekday peak.

Why Would Someone From Fullerton Train At Van Nuys?

For things a small field cannot supply: a twin on the ramp, a Cirrus SR22 Turbo, a complex trainer, a full-motion simulator, spin training in a utility-category aircraft, and a fleet deep enough that a maintenance squawk does not cost you a fortnight.

What Airplanes Do You Have?

Cessna 162 Skycatchers, Piper Warriors, Diamond DA20-C1s, a Piper Arrow, a Piper Seminole and a Cirrus SR22 Turbo, plus a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator and a Redbird TD2 desktop trainer.

Should I Commute Weekly For A Private Pilot Course?

No. Forty-six miles each way through downtown Los Angeles will erode your cadence, and cadence is what decides whether you finish in 55 hours or 85. Train locally for the private certificate and come here in blocks for the ratings and endorsements.

What Is The Seven-Day Multi-Engine Course?

A $5,100 accelerated multi-engine rating in the Piper Seminole: 8 hours in the twin, 2 hours in the full-motion simulator, 10 hours of dual and 2 hours of ground, with a Monday start and the checkride scheduled for the same weekend.

Can I Build Multi-Engine Time With You?

The Piper Seminole has no separate hourly rate: it is flown as part of the $5,100 multi-engine package. If you hold the rating, call or text (818) 330-1318 to talk through checkouts and currency. Multi-engine hours are the hardest kind to find and the most useful in a commercial logbook.

Do You Offer Spin Training For The CFI Endorsement?

Yes, in the Diamond DA20-C1, which is certificated in the utility category for spins. The spin training endorsement is the one required by 14 CFR 61.183(i) before the flight instructor practical test.

Come Up For A Block, Not A Commute

If you want to see the ramp before committing to anything, book a discovery flight at $229 for 60 minutes and fly it yourself from the left seat. If you already hold a certificate and want a rating or an endorsement, book a free consultation and we will build the block around the days you can actually give us. Call (818) 330-1318 any day from 9 AM to 9 PM. We are at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, Van Nuys, CA 91406, on Van Nuys Airport, and we have only one location.
