Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

Studio City residents learn to fly at Van Nuys Airport, and at two lessons a week a private pilot certificate takes most people five to eight months. This page is about making that work when your week does not look like everyone else's: irregular hours, long shoots, sudden gaps, and how to build a training plan that survives all three.

We are You Fly LA at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. The complete path from first lesson to checkride is on our pillar page, learn to fly in Los Angeles. Training Around An Irregular Schedule

A lot of Studio City works to production calendars rather than office hours, which breaks the standard advice to book two fixed weekly slots and defend them. The advice does not change, but the method does.

Fly hard when you are between jobs. A three-week gap flown at four lessons a week moves you further than three months flown every other week, and it costs less in total hours. We are a Part 61 school, so the syllabus is not locked to an approved curriculum and can compress or stretch to your calendar.

Use the whole day. The Van Nuys tower operates 0600 to 2245, and we are open 9 AM to 9 PM seven days a week. A 6:30 lesson before a call time and an 8:00 PM lesson after wrap are both ordinary here, and evening slots are the ones that make the required night flying easy to schedule rather than a special expedition.

Plan the pause, do not just disappear. If a job takes you out of town for eight weeks, tell your instructor before you go. Coming back after a long gap is normal and costs two or three re-familiarization lessons rather than a restart. What costs real money is stopping silently at hour 25 and returning at hour 25 with hour-10 skills.

Use the simulator when the airplane is impossible. Our Redbird MCX is a full-motion device the FAA approves as an advanced aviation training device. An hour of instrument procedures or emergency drills in it keeps your hand in on a day when weather or schedule kills the flight, and inside a package it is $120 an hour.

What Happens In Your First Lesson

Allow three hours at the airport for one hour of flying, and expect that ratio for the rest of the course.

It opens with a briefing at a table: the lesson drawn out, the sequence, and what each maneuver should feel like. Then a walkaround with your instructor, which is a proper inspection of fuel, oil, control surfaces, tires, brakes and propeller rather than a formality.

You take the left seat and taxi the airplane yourself with your feet on the rudder pedals, which everyone finds counter-intuitive for ten minutes. Your instructor works the radio on flight one and narrates it, because Van Nuys is a Class D tower beneath the Burbank Class C, just north of the Los Angeles Class B, and the frequency is genuinely busy.

Airborne, you fly straight and level, turns, climbs and descents. That is the foundation of everything else, and an hour of concentrating on it is more tiring than it sounds. You fly the approach home; your instructor flies or shares the landing. Then a debrief and the first entry in a logbook you will keep for the rest of your life. Bring your own pilot logbook and your instructor signs it; we do not provide logbooks.

Where You Practice, And What Studio City Looks Like From Above

Pattern work happens at Van Nuys itself. Two parallel runways mean light trainers usually work 16L/34R at 4,013 feet while the business jets use the 8,001-foot parallel, so your landings are not queued behind a departing jet.

Airwork happens away from the field, mostly north and west over open ground toward Chatsworth and the Santa Susana hills, about eight to twelve minutes after takeoff. Stalls, slow flight, steep turns and practice engine failures need room, obvious ground references and somewhere to aim, and that area has all three.

The eastern Valley is where your airspace education happens rather than your airwork. Hollywood Burbank Airport sits under Class C airspace a few miles east of Studio City, and the Los Angeles Class B shelves step down over the Cahuenga Pass and the Hollywood Hills. Flying from Van Nuys means learning exactly where those boundaries are, how to ask for a transition, and how to stay clear when you do not have one. Pilots who train at quiet uncontrolled fields spend their first year nervous about this. You will not.

You will still see your own neighborhood constantly. A southbound or eastbound routing puts the Cahuenga Pass, Universal, Lake Hollywood and the Hollywood Sign in the windscreen within a few minutes, and the sign is on most of our discovery flight routes. It is worth saying plainly that these are instructional flights in which you handle the controls, not sightseeing tours.

The Written Exam, And When To Take It

The FAA private pilot knowledge test is a 60-question multiple choice exam taken at a PSI testing center, about two hours long and roughly $175. You need 70 percent to pass, and the result must be in hand within the 24 calendar months before your practical test.

Take it early, and take it in a block. The students who struggle are the ones who leave it until they are otherwise ready for the checkride, because by then they are trying to learn weather theory and navigation while also polishing landings. Two or three focused weeks of ground study, ideally during a gap between jobs, gets it done. Passing it early also makes your flying lessons cheaper, because you arrive understanding why you are doing what you are doing. Our guide to the private pilot written exam covers the syllabus and the endorsement you need to sit it.

The Milestones In Order

First solo, usually between 15 and 25 hours. 14 CFR 61.87 requires a pre-solo knowledge test covering the applicable sections of parts 61 and 91, the airspace at your airport and the aircraft's limitations, with your instructor reviewing every wrong answer; logged flight training on the listed maneuvers; and a logbook endorsement for that make and model from an instructor who has flown with you in the previous 90 days.

Cross-country, night and instrument time. 14 CFR 61.109 requires 40 hours total, including 20 hours of dual and 10 hours of solo, three hours of cross-country training, three hours of night training with a flight over 100 nautical miles and ten takeoffs and landings, three hours of instrument training, and a 150-nautical-mile solo cross-country.

The checkride. An oral and a flight with a designated pilot examiner, whose fee runs roughly $800 to $1,000 in Southern California and is paid directly to the examiner.

Learning To Fly In Studio City FAQ

Can You Learn To Fly In Studio City?

Not in Studio City itself, because there is no airfield there. Studio City residents train at Van Nuys Airport, the nearest field with a training fleet, about ten miles north-west.

Can I Train With An Unpredictable Work Schedule?

Yes, and many of our students do. Fly intensively during gaps between jobs, use early-morning and evening slots while the tower is open from 0600 to 2245, and tell your instructor before a long absence so the return is planned rather than a restart.

What Happens If I Have To Stop For Two Months?

You come back and fly two or three re-familiarization lessons. Your logged hours never expire and your student pilot certificate does not either. The medical certificate has its own validity period, which we will check with you.

How Long Is The FAA Written Exam?

Sixty multiple choice questions, about two hours, roughly $175 at a PSI testing center, with a pass mark of 70 percent. The result must be held within the 24 calendar months before your practical test.

Where Do You Practice Maneuvers?

North and west of Van Nuys over open ground toward Chatsworth and the Santa Susana hills, eight to twelve minutes after takeoff. Landings and pattern work happen at Van Nuys, where light trainers use the shorter of the two parallel runways.

Will I Fly Over The Hollywood Sign?

It is on most of our discovery flight routes and you will see it regularly during training. These are instructional flights in which you handle the controls, not sightseeing tours.

How Much Does Learning To Fly Cost?

The Private Pilot Standard course is $10,400 including books and materials. Add about $175 for the written test and roughly $800 to $1,000 for the examiner. Sport Pilot is $8,400 if a lighter certificate suits you.

Do I Need A Medical Certificate To Start?

No. It is required before your first solo, not before your first lesson. Most students book the exam with an Aviation Medical Examiner during their first month.

Book The First Hour Around Your Next Gap

A discovery flight is $229 for sixty minutes, flown from the left seat with an instructor beside you, logged as dual instruction toward your certificate, and credited in full toward a course if you enroll within twenty-four hours.
