Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

Airplane rides near Toluca Lake are not at the airport four minutes from your house; they are thirteen miles west at Van Nuys Airport, 18 to 25 minutes on the 101 off-peak. You Fly LA flies from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, and for $229 you get 60 minutes in the left seat of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor beside you, flying it yourself. Turn east after takeoff and the landmarks come in quick succession: the Universal backlot, the Warner Bros. lot, the golf course and the lake your neighborhood takes its name from, and above them the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory.

Quick Answer: A discovery flight from Toluca Lake is $229 for 60 minutes, $299 for 90 or $399 for 120, from Van Nuys Airport 18 to 25 minutes west on the 101 (35 to 48 at 5 PM, when Riverside Dr and Victory Blvd are steadier). You fly the airplane, and the Downtown flight for two at $299 is the natural choice from here.

Thirteen Miles West, Mostly On The 101

The default route is the 101 westbound from Barham Blvd or Cahuenga to the Balboa Blvd exit in Encino, then north on Balboa for just under four miles. Thirteen miles all in, eighteen to twenty-five minutes off-peak.

The weakness is the same one everybody in the east Valley shares: the westbound 101 through Sherman Oaks between four and seven. Riverside Dr west to Victory Blvd, then Victory all the way to Balboa is the surface alternative — slower off-peak, far more predictable in the evening, and it never touches the 101/405 interchange. The third option, from the north side of Toluca Lake, is the 170 north to Sherman Way and then west, which is the route most locals forget exists.

Toluca Lake To 7900 Balboa Blvd
Route Distance Off-Peak Weekday 5 PM
101 west, Balboa Blvd exit, north ~13 mi 18–25 min 35–48 min
Riverside Dr to Victory Blvd, west ~11 mi 24–30 min 30–38 min
170 north, Sherman Way west ~13 mi 22–28 min 30–38 min

Hollywood Burbank is four minutes from your house and is not where a first lesson happens: it is a Class C field built around scheduled airline and charter traffic, and a discovery flight there would spend a chunk of its hour waiting for jets. Van Nuys is Class D — a tower, parallel runways, plenty of general aviation — which is busy enough to teach you something and open enough that your hour is spent flying. The field is described on what Van Nuys Airport is like.

What You'll See From Toluca Lake's Side Of The Route

Three of the route's landmarks are practically neighbors: Universal Studios, the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory. From Toluca Lake an eastbound 60-minute flight takes all three in properly; the full loop, landmark by landmark, is mapped on our airplane rides page.

Toluca Lake sits in the gap between the Hollywood Hills and the Verdugos, which makes an eastbound flight from Van Nuys unusually rewarding, because everything is stacked close together.

The Universal backlot comes up first — the standing sets, the tram route and the theme park laid out as one continuous piece of land, which is not how it reads from Lankershim. Just north of it, the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank shows its rows of sound stages, and the Lakeside Golf Club and the lake the neighborhood is named for sit in the middle of your own streets, green and unmistakable.

The Los Angeles River runs along the south-east edge in its concrete channel and is the easiest navigation feature in the basin — you can follow it from Griffith Park down past downtown. Above it, Griffith Park rises with the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and Griffith Observatory on the south slope of Mount Hollywood, and beyond those the downtown skyline stands on the plain. It is a short hop from here, which is why the two-person Downtown Los Angeles flight at $299 for 60 minutes is the natural choice from Toluca Lake.

The Verdugo Mountains close the view to the north-east, and the gap between them and the Hollywood Hills — the one Barham and the 134 both use — is the piece of local geography that makes most sense from the air. Toluca Lake sits in the bottom of it, which is why the neighborhood is flat and green while everything on either side climbs.

How Your Discovery Flight Works

You are in the left seat for most of the hour, with the instructor on the controls beside you, and two hours at the airport for a 60-minute flight is realistic. The full sequence is set out on how a first lesson is structured.

  1. 101 West, Or Riverside To Victory

Off-peak it is 18 to 25 minutes: 101 west, off at Balboa, then just under four miles north. In the evening, skip the freeway and take Riverside to Victory or the 170 to Sherman Way. Parking is free at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108; arrive fifteen minutes early.

  2. The Briefing

Around five minutes at a table: the controls, the few instruments that matter and an eastbound plan back toward the studios and home.

  3. The Preflight

A checklist walk round the Warrior with your instructor: fuel sampled, oil checked, tires, and each control surface moved by hand.

  4. Takeoff

Your instructor takes the radio and the runway; your hands rest on the yoke through the takeoff so you feel the airplane lift, and once the climb settles you are flying.

  5. East Toward The Lot And The Lake

Climbs, turns and holding an altitude are yours as the Universal backlot, the Warner Bros. stages and Lakeside Golf Club come up in turn, then the river bending east around Griffith Park toward Glendale.

  6. Descent, Landing, Debrief

You fly the descent back over the Valley, the instructor lands, and you talk through the flight before the hour goes into your logbook.

Logbook, Certificate And What Comes Next

The hour is entered in a logbook as dual instruction received. It counts toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum for a private pilot certificate, which means that if you carry on, nothing about the first flight is repeated or wasted.

Plenty of people book a discovery flight with no intention of doing anything further and then change their minds in the debrief. If that is a realistic possibility, the Toluca Lake flight school page sets out the programs and the timelines, and a free in-person consultation costs nothing and takes about half an hour.

Weather And Cancellations

The east Valley usually clears earlier than the west, but the airport is what counts and it is eleven miles further west than you are. In May and June the marine layer can sit over Van Nuys well after Toluca Lake has burned off, so a bright morning on Riverside Drive is not a forecast.

Summer afternoons bring high density altitude — slower climbs, rougher air near the hills — so a morning or evening slot is a better first experience. If weather cancels your flight you pay nothing, and rescheduling is free for any reason up to 24 hours ahead. See weather, cancellations and rescheduling.

That is the live Van Nuys report, eleven miles west of you and the one that decides the flight. If the tile does not load, text (818) 330-1318 and we will tell you what the field is doing.

Give It As A Gift From Toluca Lake

From Toluca Lake the gift with the best view is the Downtown Los Angeles flight for two, $299 for 60 minutes: one person flies, the other rides along on the intercom, and the route passes over the studio lots, Griffith Park and on to the Downtown towers, a short hop from here. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate covers it, or any other flight, in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049. It is emailed within minutes, has no blackout dates, can be passed on and never expires.

$229 is one person for 60 minutes; $499 buys an hour in the Cirrus SR22, or $599 with a passenger. For someone who might carry on after the first hour, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons. Every option is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?

Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. From the 101 Balboa exit it is just under four miles north; on the Riverside and Victory route you turn north on Balboa. Put the street address in your map app rather than "Van Nuys Airport", which can send you to the wrong gate; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.

How Long Is The Drive From Toluca Lake At Rush Hour?

Plan on 35 to 48 minutes on the 101 at 5 PM on a weekday, because of the westbound squeeze through Sherman Oaks. Surface streets do better: Riverside to Victory, or the 170 up to Sherman Way, run 30 to 38 and stay clear of the 101/405 interchange.

Can Two People Fly Together?

Yes. The Downtown Los Angeles flight for two is $299 for 60 minutes and the natural choice from Toluca Lake; the Cirrus SR22 is $599 with a passenger. One person flies from the left seat and the other rides in the back on the intercom; if you both want time at the controls, book a flight each.

Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?

There is no minimum age: the person flying needs to see over the panel and wear a headset comfortably, and a parent or guardian signs for anyone under 18. The Piper Warrior is limited to 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined, the Cirrus SR22 to 200 lb and 400 lb.

Why Not Do This At Hollywood Burbank Airport?

Because it is a Class C airport run around airline and charter schedules, and a training flight there queues behind the jets. Van Nuys is Class D, so the hour you pay for is spent flying rather than holding short.

What Will I See From The Air?

The Universal backlot first, laid out as one continuous piece of land, then the Warner Bros. sound stages, Lakeside Golf Club and the lake, the Los Angeles River, and Griffith Park with the Hollywood Sign and the Observatory.

My Morning Is Clear. Is The Airport?

Not necessarily. Van Nuys is eleven miles west of you and can keep its May and June cloud for longer than Toluca Lake does, so check the live airport report on this page, or text (818) 330-1318, before you leave home.
