The airplane ride near Pasadena that lets you fly is twenty-five miles down the 134, at Van Nuys Airport: 30 to 38 minutes when the freeway behaves. You Fly LA flies from 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, and for $229 you get 60 minutes at the controls of a Piper Warrior with a certificated instructor beside you. The eastbound leg is the one that runs toward home: the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory from the north, Downtown LA off to the south, and then the Arroyo Seco, the Rose Bowl and the San Gabriel Mountains, which from the air are no longer a backdrop but the biggest thing in the windshield.
Quick Answer: From Pasadena a discovery flight is $229 for 60 minutes or $299 for 90 at Van Nuys Airport, 30 to 38 minutes away off-peak on the 134 and 101 (the 210 and 118 are steadier on a Friday evening). You fly the airplane with an instructor on the controls beside you; because of the drive, 90 minutes is usually the better buy.

Twenty-Five Miles Of The 134, And An Alternate Worth Knowing
The 134 west is the default and it is close to a straight line: out of Pasadena, past the Colorado Street Bridge, through Glendale and Burbank along the north edge of Griffith Park, then onto the 101 westbound at the Ventura interchange and off at Balboa Blvd. North on Balboa for just under four miles and you are at the gate. Twenty-five miles, roughly thirty-three minutes when it is behaving, forty-five to sixty in the weekday evening.
The alternate is genuinely useful and most Pasadena residents have never used it. The 210 west to the 118 west, then south on Balboa Blvd runs along the top of the San Fernando Valley instead of through the middle of it. It is seven or eight miles longer, but it avoids both the 134 through Glendale and the 101 through Sherman Oaks — the two stretches that turn a thirty-three-minute drive into an hour. On a Friday at five, take the 210.
| Route | Distance | Off-Peak | Friday 5 PM |
|---|---|---|---|
| 134 west, 101 west, Balboa Blvd north | ~25 mi | 30–38 min | 45–65 min |
| 210 west, 118 west, Balboa Blvd south | ~33 mi | 36–44 min | 42–55 min |
What You'll See From Pasadena's Side Of The Route
The route landmarks on your side of the basin are Griffith Observatory, Downtown LA and the Hollywood Sign, and past them the Pasadena landmarks described below. The complete loop, south past SoFi and LAX to the coast and home over the mountains, is mapped landmark by landmark on our airplane rides page.
Everybody who books from Pasadena wants the same thing, and it is reasonable: to see their own side of the mountains from the air. Van Nuys is west of you, so the eastbound leg of the flight is the one that matters, and on a 60-minute flight there is time to do it properly.
The route follows the north face of the Santa Monica Mountains, and the first landmarks are the shared ones — the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee and Griffith Observatory on the slope of Mount Hollywood, both approached from the north side. Past Griffith Park the Los Angeles River bends south through the Glendale Narrows, the Verdugo Mountains stand alone to the north-east, and downtown Los Angeles rises off the plain to the south.
The San Gabriels, The Rose Bowl, And Mount Wilson
Then your own geography arrives, and it is the best part of an eastbound flight from Van Nuys.
The Arroyo Seco is the organizing feature: a deep green cut running south out of the mountains, with the Rose Bowl sitting in the widest part of it, ringed by the golf course and completely obvious from two thousand feet. The Colorado Street Bridge crosses the arroyo just south of it in a line of arches. Old Pasadena and the Colorado Blvd grid run east from there, with the tiled dome of Pasadena City Hall as the one building you will identify without help.
Behind all of it, the San Gabriel Mountains go straight up. From the ground they are a backdrop; from the air the scale changes completely — the canyons above Altadena, the switchbacks of the Angeles Crest Highway, and the antenna farm on the summit of Mount Wilson, which from Pasadena is a distant bump and from an airplane is a recognizable cluster of towers. JPL sits at the mouth of its own canyon on the La Cañada side, and the Huntington grounds in San Marino read as a block of formal gardens in the middle of a suburb.
How Your Discovery Flight Works
Not a scenic ride: a discovery flight is the first lesson of flight training, sold on its own. Allow about two hours at the airport for 60 minutes of flying; the discovery flight explained walks through each stage in more depth.
-
134 Or 210, Depending On The Day
Off-peak, the 134 west onto the 101 and off at Balboa Blvd, then just under four miles north. On a Friday at five, the 210 west to the 118 and south on Balboa is seven or eight miles longer and usually quicker. Navigate to 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, park free on site and arrive fifteen minutes early.
-
A Briefing Before You Fly
About five minutes on the controls, the instruments and the plan. From Pasadena, ask for the eastbound leg; there is time on a 60-minute flight to do it properly.
-
The Preflight Inspection
You check the airplane with your instructor, the way every pilot does before every flight: fuel, oil, tires, control surfaces, a full walk round the airframe.
-
The Instructor's Takeoff
You sit in the pilot's seat; the instructor talks to the tower and flies the takeoff with your hands on the controls, then hands the airplane to you in the climb.
-
East, Toward Pasadena
You fly the airplane for most of the hour: past the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park, along the Verdugo Mountains, and out to where the Arroyo Seco cuts south from the San Gabriels with the Rose Bowl in its widest part.
-
Land, Debrief, Log The Time
The instructor lands, you debrief, and the time is recorded as dual instruction received toward the 40-hour Part 61 minimum. What comes after the first hour is on flight school for Pasadena residents.
Aircraft, Limits And Who Can Come
You will fly a Piper Warrior PA-28-161, a low-wing four-seat trainer. The luxury option is a Cirrus SR22, room for one passenger, with a side-yoke, a big glass panel and an airframe parachute.
Weight limits: 180 lb per person and 360 lb combined in the Warrior, 200 lb and 400 lb in the Cirrus. No FAA medical certificate is required for a discovery flight, since your instructor is pilot in command. No experience is assumed. There is no minimum age, and under-18s need a parent or guardian signature. Friends and family are welcome to watch from the airport, though only booked seats fly.

Because of the drive, Pasadena bookings skew toward 90 minutes rather than 60 — if you are spending an hour on the road, the extra half hour in the air for $299 is usually the better value of the two decisions. Whichever you pick, there is no tax and no booking fee: $229 is the total, and so is $299. More on that at the cost breakdown.
Rescheduling And Weather
Pasadena sits far enough inland that your morning can be bright while the Valley is still under cloud. The May and June marine layer reaches Van Nuys far more often than it reaches Colorado Blvd, so before a long drive, call rather than looking out of the window. We are on (818) 330-1318 from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
Summer heat raises density altitude, which means slower climbs and rougher air, especially near the mountains — a morning slot is smoother and, from Pasadena, has a better drive attached to it. Weather cancellations cost nothing and you can reschedule free for any reason up to 24 hours beforehand: see the cancellation policy.
Check that live Van Nuys report before you leave Pasadena, not the sky over Colorado Blvd. If the tile is blank, call or text (818) 330-1318 and we will tell you whether the Valley has cleared.
Give It As A Gift From Pasadena
Because the drive from Pasadena is half an hour each way, the best gift is usually the longer flight: $299 buys 90 minutes for one person, enough for the eastbound landmarks and the coast. For a couple, the Downtown Los Angeles flight for two is $299 for 60 minutes or $399 for 90, one at the controls and one on the intercom. The Discovery Flight Gift Certificate covers any of these, in thirteen amounts from $189 to $1,049, delivered by email within minutes.
There are no blackout dates and the certificate never expires, so the person you give it to can wait for a clear winter morning when the San Gabriels have snow on them. For someone serious about a certificate, Flight Training Credit in $500, $1,000 or $2,500 goes toward lessons. Every option is on our flight gift certificates page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where Do I Park At Van Nuys Airport?
Free, on site, at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108. On the 134 and 101 you leave at Balboa Blvd and drive just under four miles north; on the 210 and 118 you come south on Balboa. Enter the street address in your map app rather than "Van Nuys Airport", which can send you to the wrong gate; we are at Main Terminal Unit 108.
How Long Is The Drive From Pasadena At Rush Hour?
On a Friday at 5 PM the 134 and 101 take 45 to 65 minutes, against 30 to 38 off-peak. Going west on the 210, then the 118, then south on Balboa is steadier at 42 to 55, since it stays off the 134 in Glendale and the 101 in Sherman Oaks.
Can Two People Fly Together?
Yes. For two, the Downtown Los Angeles flight costs $299 for 60 minutes, and the Cirrus SR22 is $599 with a passenger. One person flies from the left seat and the other rides in the back on the intercom; if you both want time at the controls, book a flight each. Friends and family can come along and watch at the airport; only booked seats fly.
Is There An Age Or Weight Limit?
If a Pasadena teenager is the one flying, a parent or guardian signs and that is the only age rule; the practical requirement is seeing over the panel and wearing a headset. The Piper Warrior carries up to 180 lb a person and 360 lb in total, the Cirrus SR22 200 lb and 400 lb.
Will I See The Rose Bowl And The San Gabriels?
On the eastbound leg, yes. The Arroyo Seco organizes the view: a deep green gash that runs south from the mountains, with the Rose Bowl where it widens most, and behind it the San Gabriels, the Angeles Crest Highway and the towers on Mount Wilson.
Should I Book 60 Or 90 Minutes From Pasadena?
Usually 90 minutes at $299 rather than 60 at $229: when the drive takes an hour, an extra half hour in the air is the better-value choice.
What If The Weather Is Bad And I Have Already Driven Out?
Call before you leave. Van Nuys gets the May and June marine layer far more often than Colorado Blvd does, and if the weather cancels your flight you pay nothing and reschedule free.
