One Day Flying Lessons In Los Angeles

A one day flying lesson is a single two-hour booking at Van Nuys Airport in which you fly the airplane for about seventy minutes, and there is nothing to sign up for afterwards. It costs from $349, and that figure covers the airplane, the fuel and your instructor.

Half an hour on the ground first, ten minutes walking round the airplane with a checklist, then the flying, then ten minutes of debrief while your instructor writes up your logbook. If you want the whole shape of the thing first, start with our beginner flying lessons page. The page you are reading is about doing it once, in a day.

What One Day Buys You

One day means one booking, and the booking is two hours. You arrive at 7900 Balboa Blvd, on the field at Van Nuys, about fifteen minutes before your slot and sit down with an instructor for thirty minutes. Then you walk out to the airplane, fly it, and sit back down for ten minutes while the logbook entry is written. Then you drive home. No deposit toward a course, no second appointment, no application.

What the money holds is two hours of an instructor's time and an airplane booked in your name. Lesson slots can be booked between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM every day of the week, so the day can be a Tuesday if a Tuesday suits you better than a Saturday.

If you can choose the day with the season in mind, our weather and cancellation policy says it plainly. In June, book an afternoon, because of the marine layer. From July to September, early morning has the smoothest air, so take the 9:00 AM slot. Winter is the best flying season of the year. And if the weather says no on the day, you do not pay.

What You Can Learn In Two Hours

Four things, honestly. How to point the airplane with your hands and the rudder pedals working together. How to hold a heading and an altitude at the same time, which sounds like nothing and is not. How to climb and descend at a speed rather than at an angle. And what a coordinated turn feels like against one where your feet have gone to sleep.

Most first-timers chase the heading with their hands alone and forget the pedals are there. The Diamond DA20 mentions this within about ten seconds. The Cessna 162 lets you get away with it rather longer, which is why we think it is the kinder of the two for a first day.

Your instructor keeps the radio. Van Nuys is a Class D field under the Los Angeles Class B shelf, with two parallel runways and Sherman Way running through a tunnel under the field. It is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, and learning to talk on that frequency belongs to a later lesson.

Twenty minutes in, most people stop gripping. That change is the part of the day worth paying for.

Whether One Lesson Is Enough

One day does not make you a pilot, and nobody here will tell you it does. A private certificate takes at least forty hours of flight time under 14 CFR 61.109. It also takes a two-hour knowledge test at about $175 at PSI, a practical test with an examiner at roughly $800 to $1,000, and a medical certificate before your first solo.

What one day settles is the question you cannot answer from the ground: whether you like flying an airplane, or whether you like the idea of flying an airplane. They are different feelings, and you can only tell them apart over Simi Valley with your own hands on the controls.

Some people climb out quiet, relieved, and never book again. For $349 that is a fair answer to a question that might otherwise sit there for thirty years. Some climb out asking what the next step costs. A few ask on the taxi back in.

Either way you leave with a logbook entry signed by a certificated flight instructor and logged as dual instruction received. It stays yours wherever you fly next.

If You Want More Than One Day

Enroll in a course within twenty-four hours of your lesson and the full lesson price comes off the package. All of it, whether that is the $249 you paid for the simulator or the $749 you paid for the Cirrus. It is not a voucher and not a code; the amount is taken off what you owe.

Where it goes next depends on the certificate you want. Sport Pilot is $8,400 and flown in the Cessna 162. Private Pilot Standard is $10,400. Books and materials are inside both numbers, and both can be paid monthly.

Let the twenty-four hours pass and the only thing lost is the credit. The flight time still counts toward the forty hours, and we have had people come back nine months later and start from that logbook entry. What ongoing flight training costs sets out the rest.

Buying Somebody Else A Day In The Air

A gift card is the sane way to give a flying lesson, because the person receiving it picks the date and the weather. We sell the beginner flying lesson gift card at each of the five lesson prices, so you choose a lesson rather than guess at a dollar amount. It arrives by email as a code and has no expiry date. They book their own slot between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, on whatever day works.

Our advice: do not buy the Cirrus for somebody who is uneasy about small airplanes. Buy the $249 simulator lesson, which never leaves the ground, or the $449 lesson in the Piper Warrior so that you can sit in the back and go with them. The $749 lesson is for the person who already reads about airplanes on purpose.

If the sky is wrong on the day they pick, nothing is charged and they rebook. A reschedule they ask for themselves is free up to twenty-four hours before.

Questions About One Day Lessons

Can A Teenager Take A One Day Lesson?

Yes. There is no minimum age to fly with an instructor, though you have to be sixteen to fly solo, and anyone under eighteen needs a parent or guardian. For ten to fifteen year olds who want more than one day, our Teens Pilot Course is $4,200 and covers ten hours of flight, three in the simulator and seven in a classroom.

Do I Need A Medical Certificate For One Day?

No. The medical rules are in 14 CFR 61.23 and they apply before you fly solo, not before you fly with an instructor beside you. You do not need a license or any experience either.

What Should I Bring?

A photo ID, sunglasses and closed-toe shoes. Headsets are lent, so there is nothing to buy, and if you already own a logbook, bring it.

Can Two Of Us Fly On The Same Day?

On the $449 lesson one of you flies the Piper Warrior and the other rides in the back on the intercom. The Warrior has four seats and the combined weight limit for the two of you is 360 lb. The guest is not charged separately.

Which Airplane Do I Get On The $349 Lesson?

A Cessna 162 Skycatcher or a Piper Warrior, depending on what the schedule looks like that day. We have six Skycatchers, N60225, N7030B, N6039M, N179LC, N5208V and N52049, and two Warriors, N3034Q and N6312C. Ask when you book and we will tell you what is likely.

Is There A Weight Limit?

Yes, and it belongs to the airplane. The Cessna 162 and the Piper Warrior take up to 180 lb per person. The Diamond DA20 and the Cirrus SR22 Turbo take up to 200 lb for the person flying. The simulator has no limit.
