"Full flight simulator" is a specific FAA term, not a general one. It means the airline-grade devices used for type ratings. Most flight schools, including ours, use a different category of device. Here's how they differ and what each can count for.
The Four Types Of FAA-Recognized Devices
| Device | What It Is | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Full Flight Simulator (FFS) | A full replica of one aircraft type on a motion platform, qualified under 14 CFR Part 60 at Levels A to D | Airline type ratings and recurrent training |
| Flight Training Device (FTD) | A replica cockpit of a specific aircraft, usually without full motion | Procedures and systems training |
| Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) | FAA-approved device with a more complete flight model and avionics | Instrument training and currency, plus some other credit |
| Basic Aviation Training Device (BATD) | Entry-level FAA-approved device | Limited instrument training and currency |
How Many Hours Can Count
- Private pilot: Up to 2.5 hours in an FFS or FTD, with an authorized instructor (14 CFR 61.109(k)).
- Instrument rating: Up to 20 hours in an advanced aviation training device, or 10 in a basic one. The total across all devices is capped at 20 hours outside a Part 142 training center (14 CFR 61.65(i) and (j)).
- Commercial pilot: Up to 50 hours in an FFS or FTD with an authorized instructor (14 CFR 61.129(i)).
Credit for aviation training devices also depends on the device's FAA Letter of Authorization. Your instructor confirms how each session can be logged.
Where Full Motion Fits In
Motion isn't what makes a device count. It's what makes it feel real. Our MCX full-motion simulator at Van Nuys tilts, rolls and pitches with your inputs, so steep turns, stalls and landings feel closer to the airplane. Students use it for instrument practice, emergencies and weather days. An hour with an instructor is $189. Book the simulator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is A Full Flight Simulator The Same As A Full-Motion Simulator?
No. "Full flight simulator" is an FAA qualification for airline-grade devices. Many smaller devices have full motion without being an FFS.
Can I Log Simulator Time Toward My Instrument Rating?
Yes, within the limits in 14 CFR 61.65, when an authorized instructor gives the training in an approved device.
Can I Try The Simulator Without Being A Student?
Yes. The Full-Motion Flight Simulator Experience is open to anyone, with no weight limit, and it's never canceled for weather.
