Typical route, flown without landing anywhere but Van Nuys. Weather and air traffic control set the final path on the day.

Van Nuys Airport is about ninety miles from Santa Barbara down US-101, which is a one-hour-forty to two-and-a-half-hour drive and emphatically not a commute. Nobody should drive that twice a week for a private pilot certificate, so this page is about the one thing it is genuinely good for: coming down for an accelerated block, finishing a rating in days rather than months, and driving home with it.

We are You Fly LA at 7900 Balboa Blvd, Main Terminal Unit 108, on Van Nuys Airport. If you want the ordinary, week-by-week version of training instead, read flight school in Los Angeles or learn to fly in Los Angeles and train at your local field. If you want a rating finished in a defined block of time, keep reading.

Ninety Miles Is Not A Commute, And We Will Not Pretend It Is

US-101 south from Santa Barbara runs through Carpinteria and Ventura, past Camarillo, over the Conejo Grade and down into the west Valley, where you leave it for the 405 north or cut across on the 118. It is ninety to ninety-five miles depending on where in Santa Barbara you start. Off-peak that is an hour forty to an hour fifty-five. Southbound on a Friday afternoon, or northbound on a Sunday evening, it can be two and a half hours or worse, and a wreck on the Conejo Grade can add another hour with no warning.

A flight lesson is a three-hour commitment at the airport before the drive. Adding three to five hours of driving to it twice a week is not a training plan, it is a way to stop training by month three. Santa Barbara has its own towered airport with flight training on the field, and Santa Ynez sits just over the pass. For a private pilot certificate from scratch, train where you live and fly often. That advice costs us a customer and it is still the right advice.

When Coming To Van Nuys Does Make Sense

The calculation changes completely when the training is short, intensive and finite. Four situations come up repeatedly with pilots from Santa Barbara and the Central Coast.

A multi-engine rating in a week. Our Multi-Engine course is $5,100 and runs as a seven-day accelerated block: 8 hours in the Piper Seminole, 2 hours in the full-motion simulator, 10 hours of dual and 2 hours of ground. Classes start on Mondays and the checkride is normally the same weekend. You drive down once, stay for a week, and drive home with the rating. Details on the multi-engine rating in Los Angeles.

An instrument rating you have been chipping away at for two years. The Instrument course is $11,700 and includes 20 hours in the airplane, 20 hours in the Redbird MCX simulator, 40 hours of dual and 10 hours of ground. Under 14 CFR 61.65, simulator time in an approved device counts toward the rating, which is why an accelerated instrument block is realistic in a way an accelerated private is not. Los Angeles airspace is also the right place to learn instrument flying, because the approaches are busy and the controllers expect competence.

An endorsement that needs a specific airplane. The complex endorsement under 14 CFR 61.31(e) takes a retractable-gear, constant-speed-prop airplane, and we have a Piper Arrow for it at $999. The high-performance endorsement under 61.31(f) takes more than 200 horsepower, and we have a Cirrus SR22 Turbo for it at $1,799. If the airplane you need is not on your home ramp, a two-day trip solves it.

The full career path. The Airline Pilot Career Program is $84,000 across roughly nine months to about 260 logged hours and every rating through MEI. If you are relocating for training anyway, ninety miles is not a consideration. See the airline pilot career program.

What An Accelerated Week Actually Looks Like

Take the multi-engine week as the model, because it is the most common.

Monday morning starts with ground: systems, the Seminole's counter-rotating propellers, single-engine aerodynamics, Vmc and what it actually means in the airplane rather than on a diagram. You fly that afternoon. Tuesday through Friday are two flights a day with simulator work between them, building engine-out procedures, single-engine approaches and the Vmc demonstration to the standard the examiner will ask for. The oral and the flight test fall at the end of the week.

Two features of Van Nuys make that schedule hold. The tower operates 0600 to 2245, so two flights a day with a gap between them is straightforward rather than a scramble. And a Redbird MCX full-motion simulator with a multi-engine profile means a maintenance issue or a marine layer morning does not cost you a day, because the training moves inside and still counts.

Accelerated only works if nothing slips. That is the honest risk, and it is why fleet depth and a long tower day matter more than anything else on a compressed schedule.

Weather Is The Real Argument For The Valley

Coastal California and the inland Valley are different climates twenty miles apart, and for an accelerated block that difference is the whole game.

According to the NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals for Van Nuys Airport, station USW00023130, this field records about 33.9 days a year with measurable precipitation of 0.01 inches or more, and an annual precipitation normal of 13.42 inches. Between June and September the monthly normal for days with measurable precipitation is 0.1, 0.1, 0.1 and 0.6. The coast behaves differently: at Santa Monica Municipal Airport, station USW00093197, the same normals give 37.6 precipitation days a year and a July mean maximum temperature of 75.1 degrees against Van Nuys at 91.2 degrees. That sixteen-degree gap is the marine layer, and it is the thing that grounds coastal mornings.

Rain is not what cancels flights in Southern California. Low cloud is. The marine layer pushes inland overnight in late spring and early summer and burns off from the inland side first, which is why a Valley field is usually flying an hour or two before a coastal one. On a seven-day accelerated course, one or two recovered mornings is the difference between finishing on schedule and driving home without the rating. Our page on flyable days at Van Nuys sets out the month-by-month picture with the source data.

Where You Stay

Most accelerated students book a hotel within a few miles of the airport, and there are a lot of them along Sepulveda and Ventura Blvd because Van Nuys is a business aviation field. Some drive down Sunday evening and home Saturday. A few commute daily from Santa Barbara for a short two-day endorsement, which is tolerable when it is two trips rather than twenty. We will help you plan it around the syllabus, and housing and transport for out-of-town students covers the practicalities.

Books and materials are included in course prices. We are a Part 61 school, which is what makes an accelerated block legal and practical, and it is also why we do not issue I-20s. We do not accept the GI Bill. Financing is either interest-free direct installments over up to twelve months or Stratus Financial over a longer term with a soft credit check.

The Flight Home Is Part Of The Point

Once you hold the rating, the ninety miles that made daily training impossible becomes a fifty-minute flight up the coast, and one of the best fifty minutes in American general aviation: Point Mugu, the Oxnard plain, the Rincon, and the Channel Islands sitting out to the left the whole way. Pilots who train with us from the Central Coast tend to come back for time building precisely because the trip is pleasant in an airplane and grim in a car.

Santa Barbara Flight Training FAQ

How Far Is Van Nuys Airport From Santa Barbara?

About ninety to ninety-five miles by road on US-101. One hour forty to one hour fifty-five off-peak, and up to two and a half hours or more on a Friday afternoon southbound or a Sunday evening northbound.

Should Someone From Santa Barbara Train At Van Nuys?

Not for a private pilot certificate from scratch. Fly where you live and fly often. Come to Van Nuys for accelerated work: a multi-engine rating in a week, an instrument rating, a commercial certificate or an endorsement that needs a specific airplane.

How Long Does The Accelerated Multi-Engine Rating Take?

Seven days. Classes start on Mondays and the checkride is normally the same weekend. The course is $5,100 and includes 8 hours in the Piper Seminole, 2 hours of simulator, 10 hours of dual and 2 hours of ground.

Is The Weather Better Inland For An Accelerated Course?

Usually, in late spring and early summer. The marine layer burns off from the inland side first, so a Valley field is often flying an hour or two before a coastal one. NOAA 1991–2020 normals give Van Nuys 33.9 days a year with measurable precipitation against 37.6 at Santa Monica.

Where Do Out-Of-Town Students Stay?

Most book a hotel within a few miles of the airport, of which there are many because Van Nuys is a business aviation field. We will help you plan the week so the accommodation matches the syllabus.

Can I Use A Simulator Toward My Instrument Rating?

Yes. Our Instrument course includes 20 hours in the Redbird MCX, an FAA-approved advanced aviation training device, and 14 CFR 61.65 allows a defined portion of the required instrument time in an approved device.

Do You Take GI Bill Funding Or Issue I-20s?

No. We are a Part 61 school. We do not hold Part 141 approval, we do not issue I-20s for student visas, and we do not accept the GI Bill.

Can I Fly To Van Nuys Instead Of Driving?

If you already hold a certificate, yes, and many pilots do. It is about a fifty-minute flight down the coast. To fly one of our aircraft after that, call or text (818) 330-1318 to talk through checkouts and currency.

Plan The Week, Then Come Down Once

The right first step from Santa Barbara is a conversation, not a booking. Book a free consultation and we will look at your logbook, your dates and the rating you want, and tell you honestly whether an accelerated block at Van Nuys is a good use of your money or whether you should stay home and fly locally. If you simply want an hour in the airplane while you are down here, a discovery flight is $229 for sixty minutes and is logged as dual instruction. Call (818) 330-1318 any day between 9 AM and 9 PM.
