Before that you sit down with your instructor for half an hour and learn what the yoke, the rudder pedals and the throttle do, so the flying makes sense when it starts. The lesson is logged, and the time counts toward a private pilot certificate.

You fly a Cessna 162 Skycatcher or a Piper Warrior PA-28-161, depending on what is on the ramp that morning. The Skycatcher is a hundred-horsepower two-seater with a Garmin G300 glass panel. The Warrior is a four-seat low wing with a hundred and sixty. Both are what our students fly on day one.

The Two Hours

The Two-Hour Beginner Flying Lesson, Minute By Minute

Minutes

What Happens

30

Ground lesson: the controls, the instruments and the plan

10

Preflight walk-around with the checklist

About 70

Flying, over Simi Valley and the Santa Susana Mountains

10

Debrief and your signed logbook entry

What $349 Covers

The airplane, the fuel, your instructor for the full two hours, the ground lesson and the debrief.
